Not gonna lie...it’s been a rough 4 months after surgery...the early April peek at the patch was actually looking pretty good...my knee was a tad swollen still...but the missus and I decided it just wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t try to get the gardens in order...

Thursday, June 20 View Page
These guys showed up quite a bit during my early spring prep...kinda creepy actually...had to keep lookin over my shoulder....

Thursday, June 20 View Page
On the pumpkin side...the race was on...best I can tell we are two weeks behind last year...which makes sense...started 15 days later..you know?...when normal people start?

Thursday, June 20 View Page
The 2157 was the best out of the gate so got the prime spot...two days later the stem split so we put in an 1810 back-up...

Thursday, June 20 View Page
All tucked in...to be continued....

Sunday, June 23 View Page
Dang it all..I was really hoping to plaster the journal a few days ago with a bunch of lush and nonsense but got called away...anyhow..I’ll blast it now...Rebel likes that shit...where was I?...oh yea....the pumpkins...all tucked in

Sunday, June 23 View Page
Early, early spring was nice but come the first of May we got cold wet and grey, grey grey...total of 3 days of sun for the month...the plants got a little yellow-ee and slowed a tad...my diagnosis-it sucks out...let them alone...1810 (closest) laid down beautiful...2157...crack split wide open

Sunday, June 23 View Page
The 1810 porkchop is the winner...this pic from a little over a week ago...she’s starting to crank now...let the wind fence dance begin in the main patch...

Sunday, June 23 View Page
Eater peppers went in ...one season long starter pack per plant ...just have to make sure they don’t dry out ...easy peezy....

Sunday, June 23 View Page
Aight...it’s mater time..the plants look great this year, i went 5 for 10 with the 5.95 wixoms...exciting...

Sunday, June 23 View Page
Plants are in the garden...2 5.95’s made the cut...3 megadoms and 4 5.71 lambchops....I’m gonna have to stake these soon...whew!...glad that’s done...

Sunday, June 23 View Page
Now where the hell are all these gonna go?....

Sunday, June 23 View Page
That brings us to patch number 2...oh yea baby...that’s right...it is OnNN like DOnKeY KonG!...you know , and as I get thinking about it, I’m prolly gonna have to do a presentation at the big show in Vegas this year so I thought I would really try to do a good job documenting exactly what I’m going to do.. Now I’m not going to be testing the soil but I have tested before and the test always come back the same...so what do I know?...it’s a wet area first and foremost...everything in the soil is relatively balanced , I’m just low on most stuff. ph is right about 7...I’m around 5% om...the “tilth” is terrific...it just feels great...(doesn’t taste as great as I thought it would but I don’t think that part is all that important )...here I’ve added a few wheelbarrows of black leaf compost..

Sunday, June 23 View Page
After the compost was spread and tilled...I added 50lbs of organic fertilizer...(mostly a mix of foxfarms granular ferts)...also 10lbs of Wallace wow kelp, 2 cups of Epsom salts, 1/2 cup of borox...tilled it again...that’s step one..nice and finely tilled...chop up the worms...all the pieces grow new ones...(it’s science.)..then I scraped all the “crema” off the top 6” into planting mounds...remember...early season it is wet here and tomatoes don’t like wet feet in my area...

Sunday, June 23 View Page
Step 2 was to dig down 20” at each planting site...all easy digging in my gardens...gotta love good soil..

Sunday, June 23 View Page
After the holes were dug, we mixed in a few cups of soil conditioner at the bottom of each hole....step three, check...

Sunday, June 23 View Page
Step four, top off holes with good potting mix..this year it’s happy frog potting mix..add starter fertilizer on the mounds and mix in....reshape...(those are my waddle marks in between the mounds..)

Sunday, June 23 View Page
It’s the black bag for all the plants in this garden...mounds all mixed and ready to plant...hard work is done

Sunday, June 23 View Page
A few days later and some rain we are ready to put plants in...I’m easily able to dig down 12” with my hand...two season long starter packs, azos and pumpkin mykos from Wallace wow...

Sunday, June 23 View Page
That’s it...all planted....the rain watered them in...Won’t worry about them for another month..and now that they are planted....

Sunday, June 23 View Page
Time to start “pimpin “....

Dear lord ....please forgive orangeneck....he’s a Democrat....

Thursday, July 18 View Page
Middle of July ...dam this season is flying...it’s really tough this year to find the time to post as often as I’d like...and by that I mean lambchop is really dropping the ball on all the weeding that needs to be done in order to take a good photo...lemme get caught up on how things are planning out here on the porkchop plantation...

Thursday, July 18 View Page
The 1810 porkchop...uugh...all things considered, it’s lookin ok....right about the time I was to start “pushing” them I noticed that growth had slowed a tad compared to years past and was getting a little more wilted toward the center of the plant...

Thursday, July 18 View Page
I said all things considered..i emailed the people over at Wallace wow to ask about mustard seed and Ron emailed me back to say that a good pumpkin could still be grown off a foaming stump...1500+ he says..I had two thoughts -number one, yer ron wallace ....you cheat...and the other was that I have seen people with foamers before, just never seen one before there was a female open..this is actually a good thing..we’re gonna beat buzzkill glens haybale stank without a stump this year..

Thursday, July 18 View Page
The wilting has stopped, growth has resumed and there are roots evErywhere...July 5th pollination so whatever day that is...fruit growth looks normal...just like the momma...will train for longer secondary’s behind the punkin...

We half assedly tried growing Brussel sprouts last year and ended up with less than 3 pea sized sprouts...lol...neither one of us has ever even tried a brussel sprout but the missus saw Chef Ramsey make some so I guess this is our year...couple purple ones in there...

Thursday, July 18 View Page
Starting to get the shrubs under control...I had to cut off all the color but it’ll be colored up again by fall...and there’s the little garden ding dong Saydee...another awesome garden helper...she’s chased 7 chimp monks into her swimming pool...to their death...in case it was them that chewed our maters...bastards

Thursday, July 18 View Page
Couple touch-ups and some fresh mulch and I won’t have to touch the landscape until late spring...notice the laceleaf Japanese maple?...we planted that 8 yrs ago and it died that winter...I thought i dug it out when I planted the replacement...noticed it last year coming back...again, the little things...my buddy stopped by to check out the mater patch ...where’d I leave off with the maters?...

Thursday, July 18 View Page
Oh yea...buckets don’t fail me now...they didn’t...along with some liquid fence and shuffling random items around , ladder, rolled fencing, some boards we kept it under control...had a little bit of nibbling here and there but for the most part , we got through the critter damage..my plan of letting them to themselves for the first month almost worked out but the sun stuck around for a while and dried things out...here’s garden rebels “Big Marley” cross...so far so good rebel...thanks for the chance to grow these!!

Thursday, July 18 View Page
I thought doing tomatoes back here would be less work than a pumpkin but it really isn’t ...more weeding...awkward weeding...she’s good...growing well a week or two after planting

Thursday, July 18 View Page
I really let those roots search for food those first few weeks..but we hit a nice spell and the mounds were pretty dry...now I will start my feeding program...i will water 40 gallons once a week to ten 10 days with my secret fertilizer...to my secret fertilizer I will add Wallace wow humid/fulvic and their soluble seaweed...mmmm...seeeeweeeed

Thursday, July 18 View Page
Every plant is getting equal treatment in this patch....they really liked my secret fertilizer...and not gonna lie ...staking took awhile

Thursday, July 18 View Page

Interesting that the worst eaten plant (5.71 lambchop)has a mega on each branch...could be growing low on this one...will prune the leafs touching the ground now that the plants are established...lots of lantana in containers this year with the season long starter packs from wallace wow....I’ll be trying to get a photo of a hummingbird at a mega blossom this year...quick little buggers...walking boards down

Thursday, August 1 View Page
It’s getting harder to find an angle that doesn’t show all the problems we’re having with the plant ...leaking slime everywhere...we’re drilling holes all up And down the vine like we’re screwing down a deck...pumpkin is growing slowly, but growing...letting a couple more go for the heck of it...I knew we shoulda takin the year off...lambchop is not giving up...

Murderers Row...Ned’s 5.3 momate in the front followed by the mean green 6.06 Mobymike....and two Of garden rebels “big marleys”...nothing spectacular but I’ve been staring at the Domingos so it’s hard to judge...

Saturday, August 3 View Page
Couldn’t get any megas on the Momate so I’ll go with one of these biggest singles...the parent seed was a big single so we’ll see what we get...plant is topped...have three possible choices...(I need to make up my mind)....heaviest for thier size in the patch...twice what Domingos weigh ...

Saturday, August 3 View Page
Touch of early blight and minimal leaf septoria on the bottom most branches...Just now trimming up the bottom leaves off the plant to give better air flow...(way to go lambchop!!))...I always like to leave them on until fruit setting because the oldest leaves tell the story of what the plant is lacking...we’ve added Epsom salts the last two feedings(two weeks) because of a light deficiency noticed in the oldest leaves..will continue weekly adding Epsom salts to the feed...dunkels competition blend foliar applied...next up, Wallace wow compost tea!!!!!.,,,getting very excited here..

Saturday, August 3 View Page
Tell you what...there’s no mistaking the megas on the 5.71 lambchop....clipped the “hitchhikers” and hoping this one takes...temps are beautiful for the next two weeks...

Friday, August 9 View Page
Yea it stinks when things go way wrong...and technically the pumpkin is still growing...maybe 200lbs?...day 35?...but when I stop and think that I had to chop the stump off when the plant was 14’ long..??....lol...truly an amazing plant..I caught the missus weeding between the rows...she won’t let me pull it...I know it..there’s new pumpkins everywhere but the yellow is still on the move...poor lambchop

Friday, August 9 View Page
Got a couple hours in on the mater patch today....it’s glorious...no time to sit and stare this year but in quick glances and frantic upkeep things are lookin fantaboulous...orange flags on the plants that have 2 or less choices...a couple narrowed down to one and terminated..I’m very excited

That’s catches me up...mostly...decided to pick a few off the non terminated plants...in the front a big Marley that went too long and my pantyhose tore into flesh...no worries, it’s not my biggest big Marley ......I did take a bite...pretty tasty...the lighter colored two off the 5.95’s ...

Friday, August 30 View Page
Lambchop and Val got a chance to commiserate over the upcoming doom that is the first day of school...(I’m feelin for ya Ned!!)....

Friday, August 30 View Page
Lambchop gave a terrific demonstration on a technique know to only a few of the top growers...the “ OL’ wixom soak” I call it....by golly when the science works correctly you can add up to a half pound of pure water weight.....very nice lambchop....

Friday, August 30 View Page
...then Ned brought up wixom Chris in his HAmmEr pants....lol....soakers...

Friday, August 30 View Page
Aight...well...I guess we knew this was coming...(no pun intended)...yea yea yea...I do the thing with the thing and try to get Ned and Val to do the thing with the thing...lol...but I’m flipping through the pics and I think the photos of us trying to take a photo is funnier...what the hell is wrong with me?...

Friday, August 30 View Page
“Ok, ...lambchop, you stand here and take the photo...Ned,Val...take these water bottles...com on”....”you know the boner pics”....don’t smile though Ned...”I’ll stand behind the plant and look surprised...”...”ya gotta have it so it sticks out Ned ”....

Friday, August 30 View Page
“Ehh...that’s OKaaayyy...but..it’s gotta stick out so you can see it..”..”yeah, like that Val “...”wait...is that in yer shirt?....”Ned!...no smiling...serious look”....”I’ll stand back here and look surprised”....”no no no....hold on Val”....”lemme show ya”....(lol)

Friday, August 30 View Page
“Here...like this Val ...it’s gotta stick out”...”yea much better”....”yers too Ned .....Ned!?”...( is he looking at the tomato?...why is she bending back like that?..)...”here Val ...like this...with the look”....”sideways”...

Friday, August 30 View Page
“No....it’s gotta be like this...”...”Ok....that’s better...I guess..”serious face though Ned“...”it’s gotta look right”.......(is she looking at a butterfly?...Ned’s looking at the tomato right?..))....omg I just met these people..I’m an idiot...fun day...fun people...me and Ned measured...there’s a few over 26”...

Friday, August 30 View Page
Note to self....go check for Val’s “shirt boner” marks....

Friday, August 30 View Page
We missed ya esheel...and greetings to the rest of BP...ya meet some really neat people here ....good luck up at the lake guYs..!!!

Saturday, August 31 View Page
This is the next one to go...I think that’s a flash right there...I’ll pick this one sooner rather than later because there’s another weigh-off mater higher up on the plant...this one def has a chance at 5lbs...another beauty off the 5.71 lambchop ...I can now say my wife’s seeds are my favorite all Time seed...pretty neat...

Saturday, August 31 View Page
Frank the tank will be next as he’s on a truss or two up the plant...still mean green though...It’s so big...just a beauty...5.71 lambchop...

Saturday, August 31 View Page
Ned’s Momate still hanging down low...I think this one is the biggest single I’ve ever seen...Ned swears it’s 26”...no sign of flash but he’s been on there awhile...very exciting as I know these weigh to chart...solid beefy bastard ...

Saturday, August 31 View Page
Lol...and here’s Wilson ...I like to show his slender side....cheers Garden Rebel....(i really should email woody...)....wowsers...

Tuesday, September 3 View Page
Wow, what visitor to the patch today!!!....see the great blue heron in the dead tree!!??....this has to be a sign....he hung out for awhile....

Tuesday, September 3 View Page
And of course I had to google search the “spiritual” meaning of such an encounter....this is what I got—- “Occasionally, Heron symbolism is asking you to follow your path and not those of your peers. In other words, heron meaning is asking you to find unconventional ways to be self-reliant and productive. Therefore this bird suggests that no matter what the task, you can do it, and do it well. Find ways to do the things you love in life and allow these things to pay you handsomely.”...... .....ummmmm....uhhhhhhhhhh.....ummmmmm......

Tuesday, September 3 View Page

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
Beautiful afternoon yesterday to stop in and triple check all the maters hanging here in the mater patch...we’re into September now and I dunno if f we’ve ever had plants look this good...

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
Gosh darn...it really is tomato heaven....some leaf spotting, some early blight...mostly under control...should make it to the weigh offs at the end of the month...

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
This lone 5.95 wixom has taught me to give the plants even more room...no leaf issues at all...still has healthy bottom branches....it’ll be minimum 6’ spacing for us next time...the purple salvia is hard to pick up in the pics but is stunning when the light hits it right...

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
I’m not sure if I ever thanked Ned for sending me copies of the paperwork I needed to register the tomatoes with the gpc before they came up with the awesome filing system they have now on the phone...thanks Ned!!!....he also sent us this weight chart...I think we have four in Slammer Territory...guuulp...

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
Still green...and can I just give a shout out to Ron Wallace...?...Ron sent me a couple free bags of starter packs this spring... in fact , there are some under this plant right now...I’m almost convinced that the weekly feedings of his seaweed and humid/fulvic powders are what has kept us so green and vibrant for these last few seasons...let alone the wonder brew...I received my order of Mighty mustard to fit in a bio fumigation crop in the main patch and he sent me a NEwHaT!!!!...free starter packs, free hat, free advice for years....?...I mean com on....this is awesome...THANK YOU RON!!!!....

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
Ut oh...multiple post in a day...either I’m way too excited or something’s wrong...had A thunder boomer with possible hail skirt by us here...had to swing home and make sure things were all right...also talked to Woody today who’s got me in a tizzy about what might happen if we actually get to the numbers we need to hit....big IF...either way...went and checked everyone today....

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
Things were looking good...found this one ...a snow man...great shape to grow but it didn’t take all the way....

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
This one here would have probably been the first tomato I actually would have used a toothbrush on...I’ll let it go...

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
Found rot...I thought it was weird that this one started flashing...this one didn’t get a name but sent me scouting through the patch pulling all the flashed fruit...

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
And with that- my big zac growing career is at an end....sorry moby...3.84 lbs is all she had in my dirt...

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
That’s ok though, created some space for air to circulate around that fat bottomed MOmATe....

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
The rot spot one...I should’ve covered it...I saw the water pooling in there last week...thought it would’ve been closer to 6

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
Here’s the good one for team slammer!!!...good thing ned didn’t pick this one on Friday ...juuuust made 5 lbs...half pound lighter than I was hoping...

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
And the bottom...won’t be gpc registered but the 5.71 parent is registered...will save seeds ....if anyone is interested email me in the fall....

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
Here’s the 5.07 porkchop with Wilson ...he’s fine so far...I did get a tape on him...I got 27” two ways and 21.5 “ down the middle ...but tape slips right down there tight...off to the side at all and it’s bigger...I guess time/ day/comparison to the 8.22 might end up 28x28.5x23??...prolly short but yaaa never know...please please please please please....

Wednesday, September 4 View Page
No mold on Wilson...he’s safe....for now..yikes...

Sunday, September 8 View Page

Tuesday, September 10 View Page
It’s was a great day yesterday but we’ve been in a bit of a cool spell...we’ll be back into upper 70’s 80’s with lows near 60 for the next few days...I’m watching this turn very closely..want to take it as far as I can...general observation-if these Domingos flash on top first you might have a problem and you should check over very carefully, you might have to harvest early ..if they flash on the bottom first your probably ok...still check carefully...this day 5 of ripening...

Tuesday, September 10 View Page
Not a whole lotta change on the bottom this morning but turning more up on top...I think I can get another day or two...28”+..could get 6 lbs...(Domingos just need thier own chart)

Tuesday, September 10 View Page
Don’t really know how but the Momate is still green...maybe the afternoon shade?...or maybe they don’t turn red?...frank the tank is also still green.....
