Happy New Year and good luck to all in 2009!!!
Saturday, February 7 View Page
Here is shot of the home patch. Still covered in snow, but we are currently sitting at 47.84 F, so it is in the process of melting. We are supposed to keep temps like this until middle of the week. The forecast is (of course) to get colder again, but, maybe we can get rid of all the snow at least.

I filed and began a soak to do a germination test on the 353, 402, and the 661 on 2/5/2009. They soaked in 10% hydrogen peroxide for 16 hours and were then moved to damp paper towels in the 85F germination box. These are the 353s, going full steam ahead. No a bad result for less than 48 hours. 2/3 661s are peeking out, and 1/3 402 is too, but I will wait until all 3 of each are out before pictures.

So the need for more sunlight at my home patch continues. The low and easy stuff was removed last year. Now the tricky stuff (unless I pay someone else to do it). I am on a budget, so I will be attempting it myself. The red lines are where I hope to cut the limbs (not the cable line if course...good eye) The yellow area is what should be branch free to let the light in, and the green dot is there for some height perspective....it is 23 ft. of the ground. So my branches are at a range of 23-35 feet high. It will cost approx $150-200 for a service to come in and trim. That is too much for my 2009 budget. New babies are not cheap, lol. I will be building a rope ladder out of 2x4s, washers, and 200' of rope. Ignore the little voice of reason, lol.

Ok, all 3 661s are out and about. So far so good. I sent 330 of these to the Kirk for the GVGO seed packs. I also sent out 15 more bubbles for other grower requests. Hopefully they will see some decent dirt and perform well.

Still in decent time, the 402s are all out of the shell. So all the harvested seeds from 2008 are good to go. These seed test are doing nothing to keep me patient for the upcoming season. Looks like 2/3 are club roots. Interesting.

Got up to 43 degrees today. A couple hours after this picture, all the snow was gone. Supposed to drop back below freezing on the weekend.

This year I am purchasing the following supplies/ammendments for Alpha and Beta patch. Savio and I will have a large farm patch, but we are still working out what to buy for it. - 2 gallons of Neptunes Harvest fish/seaweed - 1 heating cable (for alpha only) - 5# of mycorrhizal fungi (RTI) - 1 50# bag of kelp meal - 1 50# of sulphate of potash - 250# of gypsum - 1 gallon pf liquid potassium carbonate - 1 gallon of molasses - 12 yards of 2 year old composted cow manure - maybe a little N in the form of urea or something - 1 20# bag of granular imidacloprid (for beta) - mustard seed for cover crop I will also have top buy a few more parts from dripworksusa and alo will be looking into a large water tank. Other than that, we should be set.

I have been doing some research regarding a cover crop....to be more specific, a spring starting cover crop. I need for it to go fairly deep, break up some compaction, and unlock some nutrient trapped in the clay. Most crops that go down deep, need a longer period of time to become established (1-2 years) but I don't have that kind of time, and at home I have nowhere else to rotate to. 1. White mustard is one of the fastest growing green manures 2. Mustards flower from 3-5 weeks after sowing 3. Mustard taproots extend to depths of 1-3 ft 4. Biofumigant (helps prevent some diseases/pests/weeds) 5. Increase infiltration rates and soil OM 6. Withstand temperatures into the low 20s°F (-6 C) 7. Reduce the N needs for next crop (high Nitrogen content) 8. Seed will germinate at a soil temperature as low as 40°F Now, I had alot of trouble finding White Mustard seeds. I then realized, these are the seeds used for pickling. I found them at the bulk barn for $0.42/KG which is dirt cheap. Now, whether or not they will germinate and grow....I don't know. I do know however that I put 4 seeds in each of 3 peat pellets (in my germination chamber) to see what happens. Hopefully this will work, and that is another issue solved. I hope to get this crop planted by mid to late March, depending on how cold it stays...to till down by May 1 or so. The forecast for the next 5 days calls for 40-50 during the days, so this will help warm/dry the soil.

I also started 5 pellets worth of Giant Flatpole Cabbage. Thanks to Lonnie Bourne for the seeds. I am interested to see how these do.

Started all my vegetables today. 6 of each of the following varieties: red sweet bell pepper orange sweet bell pepper yellow sweet bell pepper green bell pepper long red sweet red peppers jalapenos habaneros anaheim chilis cucumbers romas beefstakes sweet hybrid tomatoes I have more pepper seed coming soon in mail to from New Mexico State University Chile Pepper Institute. They are 1. bhuut jolokia 2. twilight 3. halloween 4. black cuban 5. mirasol They will be planted asap. The remainder, romaine lettuce, mesclun mix, carrots, radishes, and herbs will be directly sown around the start of june.

Ok, so I am adding a second part to my germination tutorial. The second part will cover from emergence of the tap root from the seed to first true leaf. I filed 4 seeds on Saturday March 14th at 4pm. I let them soak until 7am on Sunday March 15th. They sat in the germination box until Tuesday at 4:00pm (too long, kinda forgot). The tap roots were all out. I picked the best two and put in cups. At 11 pm on Wednesday March 18, they are up.
Tuesday, March 24 View Page
Alright. Here are the 2 seeds I filed 10 days ago on the 14th of March. Looking nice and stocky. The would be ready to go into the ground if they were not test seedlings.

Here are my flatpole cabbage on day 19. Looking good, but will include a bit of fish emulsion next watering.

Well the home patch (Alpha) will not be used for pumpkins this year....or maybe for a while. Gonna still grow LGs and a giant watermelon, plus lots of bell peppers, tomatoes, and 8 or 9 varieties of hot peppers including Bhut Jolokias (naga morich). I am still growing at Beta (my grandmothers house). Sav Spada and I will also be growing at a friend of mines place. He runs a lawn care company and grows pumpkins for Halloween. He has 12 acres which is divided into 3. The spot where we will be growing has not been used for pumpkins in 2 years (soy and corn)...so there should be less disease pressure. We will call this The Farm....what a great name. Here is the are we get. It is approximately 30' x 500'. We get from the drainage ditch on the left to the grass on the right, and all the way down to the road in the background.
Thursday, March 26 View Page
I want to thank Mike for letting us grow at his farm. I also want to thank him for buying all the manure we need, as well as allowing us to use whatever equipment we need. What equipment you ask? A 500 gallon water tank and a trailer to move it around and fill it. This will allow us to let the chlorine gas off and also to let the water warm up.
Thursday, March 26 View Page
A water pump so we can feed all the hoses to all plants basically at once. The field has a bunch of clay so we won't need to water as much as some do. There are drainage tiles throughout so the field does drain, but it still holds the water a bit too. I need to get all of the fittings setup to water the plants from the 1 1/2" line from this tank.

I have all the pieces glued and cut for the 12 hoop houses I need this year. They are 4' wide, 6' long, and 3' tall. The shorter pieces are the spines. In the background you can see some of the materials I picked up at the GVGO growers spring seminar on Saturday. I got (in this pic anyway): 9 50# bags of pelletized gypsum 2 50# bags of sulfate of potash
Sunday, April 5 View Page
I also brought some additional materials home (and got a few from other places) for this season: 2L of pHortress 1G of potassium carbonate 10# of mycorrhizal fungi 5# of Caliente 119 mustard cover 1L of humic acid 1G of neptunes harvest fish 1G of neptunes harvest seaweed 1G of molasses And actually in the far right of the previous entry... 1 50# bag if kelp meal

Here is my soil test. A bigger version so the numbers are easier to see. I like the looks so far. Not perfect, but with a few amendments, the soil won't be what stops me from hitting 1K...

...3 of these tanks. Actually, I didn't buy them at all. I had 3 of these given to me. I asked a supply shop in town whether or not they would sell me a couple, they said no...but they would give me a few for free. Sweet deal. They are 1000L each. I will be putting one at each of my three sites. Wait, 3 sites? Yup, a third location has been added, but due to deer pressure, I won't talk to much about it. It will be a sleeper.

So, the rain has definitely been plentiful this season. There has never been more than 5 days between rains from the 1st of April to the middle of May. So almost 4" in April.
Sunday, May 3 View Page
Due to the above average rains, I have decided to remove the soil from the stump areas at Beta patch to ensure I can get something in the ground before its too late... The area is roughly 8' x 8' and I took the soil out about 10" down. I then pitchforked the bottom layer to help dry.
Sunday, May 3 View Page
While the soil I removed from the stump areas dries, I begin my seeds. I know the farm hasn't been touched yet, but I can wait no longer on getting the plants going. I am already 2 weeks behind... I have started the following: 402 Rivington x 3 661 Rivington x 3 1134 Landry x 1 1378.5 Pitura x 1 1156 Hunt x 2 1142 Van Kooten x 1 1161 Rodonis x 1 549 Wells x 1 824 Brunst x 1 991 Johnson x 1
Monday, May 4 View Page
I have now stilled the previously pitchforked earth and removed. I will not pitchfork the new bottom. We are now at 18" or so down.
Tuesday, May 5 View Page
In my last post, I said I will not pitchfork...I meant, I will now pitchfork. Here you see the bottom layer removed again, and the new bottom (3rd new one) pitchforked. I have added a layer of manure to dry on the final bottom which is about 24" down. Once it dries completely I will till and start backfilling adding manure and amendments in layers.
Thursday, May 7 View Page
Amendments added to each of the 2 8'x8' areas around the stumps at Beta are as follows: 1/2 yard cow manure 60 lbs of sheep manure 25 lbs of peat moss 1 lbs of bone meal 5 lbs of kelp meal All was mixed in layers. Then I put the heating cable in using the Chenier Twist.

Hard to see but there is a 1' mound, kinda like a fresh tomb. The greenhouse will fit right over this. I have a total of 24"+ of loose soil under the plant.

The 1142 Van Kooten in the ground. Also 10 days late. I think the heating cables will make up for this delay though. No cables at the farm though, it will be interesting to see what happens there... My backup for this plant will be my 661 squash from last year.

Ok, an attempt was made to plant at the farm, but it seems that the ground is just too hard there to give the AGs what they need to grow big. My apologies go out to Mike who was allowing me to grow there, but I didn't want to have both of us work alot for little results. In the interest of giants, I have decided to deal with the deer in La Salle and grow behind my parents house. The soil is very sandy and will thus drain well. I didn't add any manure here due to time (and money) constraints, but I did add (over the total area of 2500 square feet): - 500 lbs of gypsum - 50 lbs of sulfate of potash - 50 lbs of kelp meal - 8 lbs of bonemeal Here you see 3/4 tilled and prepped. I will grow 3 big ones in the first three spots (you can see the plants) and in the last section, I will grow 2 pollinators. My buddy Wally may grow one of the pollinators because he may be hooked on the giants.

I also planted a 549 Wells* and a 991 Johnson as pollinators. The 549 is another line with no 900 Lyons in it. The 991 Johnson is a 998 Pukos crossed with the 505 Williton. The 505 Williton is the 1068 Wallace x 1446 Eaton. So for a pollinator, the 991 is not too bad. 998, 1068 and 1446 very recently bread into its genetics. I will use this and the 1156 Hunt to pretty much pollinate everything this year.

I also managed to get Beta patch completely tilled today. That takes care of Beta for a while.

Since getting my 3 1000L water tanks, I have been trying to figure out how best to feed the water to sprinklers. Here is what I have come up with. I bought a 2.6 HP water pump with a 1.5" inlet/outlet. It can pump 70 GPM, so it should be able to empty the 250 gallon tank in fairly short order if necessary. I have set it up so the pump pulls from the butterfly valve at the bottom of the tanks. The water then circulates through the manifold and back into the tank. This is when all 6 hose connections are closed. Once I hook a few hoses up, I start to close the valve (with the red handle) and the pressure increases in the manifold, sending the water out the hoses instead of back to the tank. I have tested it with a few hoses and it seems to work well. Once I get actual sprinklers hooked up, I will post an update on my diary.

So the initial irrigation system didn't work due to my selection in pumps. Oh well, you live and learn. At least no sal is ever final at Princess Auto. I bought this Burke pump (not the Princess Auto cheap China stuff) instead. It is 3/4 hp and will feed around 12 sprinklers. It has a 1.25" in/out and I have rigged it up so it is at the bottom of the tank. My same manifold works, and I have tested it with 6 sprinklers and it can ffed them as much as they can handle and still keep the line at 60 psi. Great deal.
Tuesday, June 16 View Page
Did a drench of the whole patch with 1000L of water and 60 grams of Actinovate. It is a 100% soluble biological fungicide for control of damping off and root rot fungi such as Pythium, Rhizoctonia, Fusarium, Phytophthora, Verticillium and others. Actinovate® SP can also increase plant size, vigor and root mass. Actinovate® Sp is also labeled as a spray application for foliar diseases such as powdery and downy mildew, Botrytis, Alternaria and others. From here on, I will spray 60 grams from my overhead sprinklers to maintain the colonies.

A full patch shot. Most weeding is under control. You can see the 3 whiz heads I have at this location. Both plants here are doing great, but the other site is a different story. I have basically given up growing at the other site, due to both lack of growth and zero extra time. The lack of growth can be contributed to adding no manure this year (last minute decision to grow there) along with the soil being mostly sand. Nothing to help the plants grow. I will check in a few days, but only one plant is showing enough growth to worry about. The rest seem to be frozen in place.

The first pollination of 2009. Just made it before the start of July. There will of course be more, but at least I am in the right time range. This one is at 13' on the main of my 402 Rivington. It is a 4 lobe and was pollinated with the 1142 Van Kooten. I have 2 more opening in the next week on my 402 at 15 and 16.5 feet, as well as 1 opening on the 1142 Van Kooten at 14'. Got the results back from my tissue test. I have a bad deficiency of Ca and Mn. Mn was likely to be as the soil test showed the same thing. The Ca however, shouldn't have been a problem as the soil test showed no lack of Ca. Something is tying it up. There is a slight K deficiency too, but everything else looks fine. I will be spraying a very diluted solution Potassium Carbonate to bring up to normal levels. I don't want to feed too much K yet, but I want to have enough. Also, Calcimax/Humic acid sprays and drenches will add to my available Ca and I have already done one spray with Manganese Sulfate. I will do two more MnS sprays before the season is up.

Weekly Update: 1142 Van Kooten This is day 48. The measurements are as follows. CC = 146.5" SS = 91.5" EE = 91.4" OTT = 329" for an estimated weight of 752.1 lbs. The 5 day average is 16.8 pounds. 10 day average is 19.4. Somewhat disappointing. We had 4 days of 10 lbs days, from the normal 25 or so... I have looked into it and am beginning to increase the amount of K that I am fertilizing with. So far (since this report is actually being entered on the 24th) the K has made the 4 day stretch of 10-11 lbs change back to 2 days in a row of 20+. I hope that trend continues a little longer.
