I don't know how current this diary will be but I'll try to keep it somewhat current.
I have a 16 month old son so I did not grow pumpkins last year. A few months back a neighbor asked me to "help" him grow pumpkins this year. I took him up on the offer.
This "new" patch consists of two differnt areas. One is a little more then 2,000 sq. feet and the other is about 500 sq. feet. Here is a picture looking left to right of the larger of the two.

Here's the same patch looking right to left.
We amended the soil based on the soil report we received about a month and a half ago. 10 yards of compost, blood meal, kelp, sulfer, humic acid, gypsum and a few other items were added and tilled in a couple times.
Here is a picture looking right to left of the main patch. Most of it will get full sun throughout the day.

I'm hoping that this situation will work out well. In addition to my 16 month old son I have a 5 year old daughter. My pumpkin mate's name is Del. He's 77 years old but you would not know it by watching him work in the patch. I'm going to teach him everything I know about growing pumpkins and hopefully I will not have to spend so much time tending to them.
Here is a picture of the smaller of the two patches.
We will be growing 5 plants so I started 9 seeds last night. We have a few more things to do before we can transplant but most of the "hard" work is finished.

Rebar is in the ground for the hoop house and the T-tape has been laid and covered.
Here are the seeds I've started:
Weight Year Grower
1502 2006 Wallace
1370 2007 Daletas
1353 2008 DeBacco
1301 2008 Miller
1092 2006 Martin
1055 2008 Jutras
1032 2007 Daletas
1005 2004 Miller
991 2005 Urena
It looks like the 1005 is not coming up. The others are up and growing.
I'm growing 5 of the above. The for sure growers are the 1502, 1092, 1055 and 991. Any thoughts? Maybe I'll flip a coin for the 5th and final spot. I did not think I would the success I did with the germination process.
I may start a few more seeds in the next couple days just in case something bad happends during or after transplanting. Like most growers I have WAY too many seeds. Any that I can't give away I'll probably take to the local Nursery and ask them to give it to interested growers.

I double planted 3 hoop houses. The back up in these 3 are the 2007 1032 Daletas and the 2007 1370.5 Daletas. I was doing some research on the aggc and both these seeds went almost 20% heavy and both the mother and father seeds were both heavy to the charts. I actually planted two of the 1032's as backups. The 1032 is the same cross as the 1308.5 McKie (1139 Sherwood '04 x 1370 Rose '03) which has 8 offspring registered in the aggc, seven of which were over 1,000 (largest 1556.5) and the 8th was the 943 Pukos.

4 of the 5 plants are doing well. We learned that no matter how careful you are round up around the patch is bad. The 4 plants in the main patch did not really get hit but the 1502 is not doing real well.
All 4 plants in the main patch are 12-16 feet and each has had a female open around the 10-13 foot mark. None of these will be kept.
I had planned on taking off the hoop houses this weekend but it has been windy here so I decided to wait a few days. All vines have been buried and a generous amount of RTI pumpkin pro has been applied to each leaf axle.

Unless one aborts I think we're done pollinating for the year. Each plant has a few open pollinations on a side vine and each plant has one or two already pollinated on the main.
All vines are currently buried. I think I have used about 16 pounds of RTI's pumpkin pro mycorrhizae so far.
I had a gopher chew 2 side vines off the Urena plant and 1 off the Jutras plant. I don't know what kind of damage he did below the surface. Del had been trying to trap and bait him without any luck. I went and bought more traps last night and found a tunnel on the outside of the fence leading into the patch and set two traps and caught him. I'm sure there are more but it's nice to get one.

Bad news to report on the 1092 Martin pumpkin. About 2-3 feet from the pumpkin a gopher ate through the main. It was the second best pumpkin growing in the patch.
We're going to line the patch with wire next year to keep the gophers out. Perhaps we'll rescue a couple cats from the shelter to protect them as well.

No records are going to come out of the patch this year. I honestly think the gophers have taken a large toll on the roots. We also have some mildew on the leaves that is not going to help.
We're learning a lot this year about the new patch, soil and how to better tend and protect the plants in the future. One thing we will change for next year is to only plant 3 plants in the lower area, squeezing 4 has not worked.

Here is the Borchard Farms winner - Leonardo Urena with his winning pumpkin - 1,242. Leonardo weighed in 2nd to last, just before Gary Miller. I did not hear what Gary's measurements were but the pumpkin looked like it would measure out to at least 1,300 lbs. When it hit the scale and the strap was removed it was announced at 1,238, just 4 lbs behind Leonardo's.
Leonardo's was grown off a 991 Urena and he told me it was crossed with a 1041 Mckie. He shared that it measured to 1,027 lbs so it went 21% heavy.
That I know of, there were 5 991's entered in today's contest. Here were the weights and % heavy to the chart (yes I did get an estimated weight or actual measurement).
Actual weight - % heavy:
1)1,242 lbs 21% heavy
2)1,088 lbs 10% heavy
3)1,040 lbs I did not get the measurements
4) 914 lbs 15% heavy
5) 914 lbs 20% heavy
My pumpkin was one of the 914's.
The 991 Urena's have done pretty well this year (and in the past). Leonardo told me that he does not have many 991's left. He did share that when he was in Niagra (this year or last I'm not sure) he was playing pumpkin poker and lost a lot 991's. He also told me that he has given many out. If anyone wants one they shouldn't be too hard to find. However, once you find one the owner may not be willing to part with it.

If I remember correctly, the pumpkin went 16% heavy, here's the inside shot. The stem is on the left side.

Here's the inside shot. This pumpkin weighed in at 914 lbs, 20.4% heavy.
There was a lot of weight in the shoulders as it was very dense. There were some areas that could be of some concern as you can see but there is still 4 inches to go before any damage could have occurred.

Over the last couple weeks we finally did some work in the patch. We cleaned it out, tilled and raked in some winter rye and some "cover crop grade" mycorrhiza from RTI.
It should rain tomorrow and the next week so hopefully everything comes up and we don't have to do much else for a few months.
In the upper left corner are the pumpkins cut up and buried. Just beyond that we extended the patch 4-5 feet in width and another 3-4 feet in length.
You can see that the kids were playing electronic "paint ball" in the park next to the patch.
I'll try to post again towards the end of the month. Hopefully the rye has come up by then.
