most growers transplant into the patch when the first true leaf is fully expanded. not the oval seed leaves but the first true leaf. That is about 7-10 days after planting the seed into a pot. I grow mine on in 7 gallon bags because my last frost date is around May 20th, but I still want an early start.

I start mine around the 3rd week in april to get them in the ground the first week in May. I'll try to have my heating cables in the ground and hoop house up by the end of the second week in april to start warming the soil.

more important is your weigh off date. You should start seeds 150-160 days before your weigh off. Many growers start seeds the last week of April/first week of May, aim to polinate the last week of June/first week of July, for weigh offs the last week of September/first week of October. your average Last Frost date (in April) won't be too important, but make sure you vent your hot houses every day or can burn your plants.

Owensboro, Ky.

A couple/3 Ky., and Ohio, Ill, and Indiana (could be 2 or 3 other states also, Iowa?) growers start seeds for a lil ole GPC weighoff in Indy!!! They have a few strange arrangements...but weighoff is in mid Aug!!! The time frame changes a lil bit, but not the idea!!! FKid, depending on the size of the pot yer sprout is in....prbly 5 days or less after you can see the sprout, it needs to be outta the pot!!! Roots on these Giants grow quick!!! Grow em BIG!!! Peace, Wayne

My last frost date may 15. So I'll start them inside 3 weeks before that. 5 weeks if I decide to use water walls. I don't worry about weight offs. I just like to grow pumpkins.
