As with some diseases it is important to closely inspect the underside of the leaves for a proper diagnosis. Looking at these leaves you can see gray or as I call it “dirty” looking areas, which indicates that this is downy mildew. In contrast, powdery mildew has a “cleaner” or whiter appearance which can actually be seen to the left of my thumb as well as closer to the leaf margin in this picture. Often times they are found together but downy mildew is the harder one to control and can also be more aggressive given the right conditions.
