Happy New Year to all and I wish everyone a new personal best in 2016! I put the patch to bed earlier this year. I brought in a backhoe and dug the whole patch down to 4 feet to loosen up that hard soil down below. I also expanded all the sides. I love Sue's advice of being able to move around in the patch and not being so confined. 1500 sq ft per plant should give me plenty of room to get around without crowding secondaries and stepping on vines as work through the patch. Mustard was planted so now we wait. If this el nino hits the weather guys are talking about, the cover crop will really help keeping my soil in place.

Here's the giant carrot that I planted last February. She's almost a year old and looking ok still so I'll give her a few more weeks. Its so hard to tell whats going on below the soil but she feels firm and healthy.

I'll pull her soon and we'll see what was going on down below.

After a year in a pot, a move to the new house and a painfully tedious fertilizing schedule we have a carrot. I don't have the best patience when it comes to watching things grow at this pace. After we cut the top she weighed in a 4.96 pounds. The next batch of carrots are already started. lol

After a little chat with MacCoy this morning I'm trying to post from my phone. Let's see how this works out.

Saturday, March 12 View Page
Wow! It worked Dan, thanks for the tip! Tech stuff isn't my thing but not that was easy. The last post was my final pick for the carrot I'll be growing until 12-31-16. This entry is some tomato trails I'm doing. These were all started indoors on January 15th and moved out a couple weeks ago. We'll call these the early, early tomatoes. 5 feet of mustard has been cut and tilled under at the patch. Soil tests are just around the corner. Looks like here we go again!!!!!

5 feet of mustard came and went this winter. Just about time for the final till. The calm before the storm...

We maybe ahead now Q Tip but I have a feeling that MacCoy guy will blow right past us in a few months! I'm headed south to Guatemala for the next 9 days so I don't have to stress about this carrot and how fast it's growing.

All the early tomatoes are set. I only got one monster bloom, the rest were normal but I have hope. Pumpkin seeds are picked and just waiting to get started. Both patches are just about ready!!

The choices have been made for the 2016 season. I'll start them all then pick the best for each spot. I only have 1 2009 so there will be a little extra attention to make sure she spouts. Master P. Thanks so much for one of the best Christmas presents a grower could ever ask for! I'll do the best I can with it.;)

All seeds are up, 1744, 2032, ricks 1756, 1676 Daletas and this one in the photo. This was the best Christmas present a pumpkin grower could ever want! A nice card, some chocolates to die for and a 2009 Wallace! You know who you are!! Thanks a million brother!! I'll do my best with it.

Tomatoes are a lot like pumpkins. You have your perfect plant, huge blooms, amazingly healthy leaves, all things look great for a huge one. The next thing you know, the clear winner has slowed and the fruit you haven't even been paying attention to blows right by all your other fruit. Here's the 5.30 MacCoy coming from behind to pass up all other contenders. Just over 20" for day 30.

So my wife and I went up to Napa Valley for the weekend for some rest and relaxation. On our way home we decided to go for a walk through this nice little neighborhood. I noticed a bunch of these nice pumpkin plants sitting on a driveway. There seemed to be plenty so I just grabbed 4. How could a guy pass up four 2032's! Who ever started these did a darn good job. Healthy as I've ever seen. We tried to get the attention of the owners but nobody came to the door. Nice but crazy area. As my wife and I were driving away we saw this guy with a huge blow torch burning the ground. It even looked like this person caught part of the grass field on fire. Glad smoky the bear wasn't around!

Pumpkins are still small but moving along. Here's the 8.41 master p. It's just over 22" and moving very slow now. Still dark green so we'll see where she ends up. I've already picked a couple that ended up just under 4 pounds so I didn't waste the time taking any pictures.

Tuesday, May 24 View Page
Here's the biggest from the early plants. It's off the 5.30 MacCoy. She's a hair over 23" and dark green. I have hopes of 5 pounds still,,,,,, not likely though. A personal best is a strong possibility,,,, we'll know I'm another 10 days.

Here's Faith after loosing her two front teeth!;) Mr. Carrot is doing very well, I just wish that I planted her in a bigger box! She's hit the bottom and pushing out the top and there's still 8 or 9 months to go. With all pumpkin plants and their backups just about on the ground the excitement and stress is just around the corner! I can't wait!!!

Sunday, May 29 View Page
Well, here's the biggest. I really thought she'd go over 5 pounds but I didn't quit make it. This one is off the 5.30 MacCoy. She is now the 4.69 Dunn for a new personal best.

Here's Ricks 1756. By far the best plant I have at the moment. Both plants in the greenhouse are three times as big as the outdoor plants. It's been cool and cloudy for the past 4 weeks. I'm able to get the greenhouse to 88 on those 68 degree cloudy days and the growth shows how much they like it. I'm also watering two to three times more in the house as the soil drys out much quicker. I'll get some pics of the 1676 Daletas and Tims 2032 as soon as there're running.

I have nothing on Bob ( bnot ) but I'll take it ;)

Not much to show here. It's been cool and cloudy for the past 6 weeks. This is the first day the sun was out when I got up this morning and it looks like it may finally be here to stay! All backups all culled and we now have the final plants. Here's the 1676 Daletas and Tims 2032. Things should start to really move with the weather turning nice.

Here's the picture for the last post.

Friday, June 17 View Page
The greenhouse plants are another story. Even with the cool weather I've been able to keep things around 85 every day. There're growing so fast I'll be adjusting things over the weekend so they can start to grow into the next greenhouse. This is Ricks 1756 on the right and the 2009 on the left. I'll have 6 fans blowing this weekend as the temps are suppose to rise into the mid 90's. This will be a good test to see how well I did my homework during the winter keeping the heat down.

Monday, June 27 View Page
Things are happening early this year on at least one of my plants.

Monday, June 27 View Page
Here she is, " The 2009 Wallace " 48 hours after pollination. She's out 18 feet and right about where I want. Let's hope she took!

Monday, June 27 View Page
Here's a couple more I pollinated early at 12' and 14' on the 2009. Ricks wonder, the 1756 isn't far behind. Everything has been on high speed in the greenhouse. Everything grows much faster in this environment. Both the 2032 from that guy that goes fishing and leaves his plants behind and the 1676 from that other guy that takes whole years off just so he can fish all summer are outdoors and growing more like what I use to. Both about 2 weeks out from pollination.

Here's the 2009. This plant has the lion share of the greenhouse. There's still a few weeks of filling to do. I've already pollinated a couple on this one and may even have my chosen fruit. Tissue tests were back last week and adjustments have been made. Now if I could just do what that Pingery guy does up north I may get a good fruit to the end.

Day 9 for the Howell/Jolivette.

Sunday, July 10 View Page
Here's the 2009. We had an early one pollinated that ran into the side of a piece of plywood... I'm meetimg with a psychiatrist now to work through anger and disappointment but I'm doing much better now. Praise God for backups.

Sunday, July 10 View Page
Both the 1756 and 2009 have reached as far as they can grow in the middle of the house. The plants really grow well not getting blown around by the wind and staying in the mid 80's most of the time. I can only hope the fruit does the same.

Thursday, July 14 View Page
Well,,,, I think I have 2 pumpkins in for the long haul. I've placed both up on the plywood and mill fabric. This is the 1756 at the very end of the tunnel. I had to brace up the plywood with 2X4's under the front in hopes of her growing to the end of her platform. It's not fun or easy to try and do this once the pumpkin is to heavy to slide. I'll posts fruit pictures once I hit day 20.

Saturday, July 23 View Page
Day 15 for my 1756 Jolivette was already out doing everything I have. I had a feeling this fruit was going to be my best after my plywood collision with my 2009.

Day 23 for the 1756 and it hasn't disappointed. Numbers are smoking anything my patch has ever seen! cc was 107" on that day!

Saturday, July 23 View Page
Now for today,,,,, day number 25 for the 1756 Ricks rock maker- cc-116" ee-74" ss-80" for an OTT of 270" and a weight of 442 pounds. Again, thanks for the seed Rick and thanks Steve for helping me keep things balanced as things kick into high gear. Now I can just hope and pray she keeps it up and I can get her to a scale in one piece. There's a long, long, long way to go until weigh off day.

The stump on this plant is just a beast! Sprayed and cleaned every week. I've had many stem and stump rots and spraying with fungicide and wiping down once a week seems to really help.

Monday, July 25 View Page
Taking samples again. I've taken them from a couple different areas of the plant. Taking them this way in hopes of getting everything out of this plant while things are good. 59 pounds for gains in last 24 hours. I must of taped it wrong! Lol

Thursday, July 28 View Page
What a ride!! The morning of day 30 today and she's 314ott and just a hair under 700 pounds!! She's done 45 to 60 pounds a day for 10 days now. Just incredible to see the changes from day to day!! I sure hope she's stays together,,,, My track record says she's blowing any day so we'll see where this ends up. We've cut back on everything from heat, Ferts and water in hopes of getting her to weigh off day.

Tomato land is moving right along. This is Dans 4.57 on day 25.

Friday, July 29 View Page
If I've learned anything about growing tomatoes it's been,,,, " it's all about the big mega blooms " first you need to get one, second you need to make sure the whole flower pollinates and third you need to slammer them with everything you got!! Here's Dans 8.41 on day 25 just over 21".

Saturday, July 30 View Page
Dang kids! I walked out to the patch last night and Kingston is standing on the main vine and sticking tape all over my best fruit! Says he was making some kind of craft,,,, kids...

Saturday, July 30 View Page
On a serious note,,, a wise grower saw how my main was positioned to my fruit last year and said I needed a lot of work. He taught me how to keep the stem straight with a very gradual slop aiming right down the main vine. It keeps the fluids flowing to the fruit and takes almost all the presume off the stem. A peice each week as she grows did the job well this year.

Saturday, July 30 View Page
Here's my 2009 at about day 28. With the disease I'm dealing with and after the plywood poked a nice hole in the chosen fruit I just haven't been able to get her going. She does look like she's turned up the growth a little and I'm looking forward to taping her on day 30.

I found this pretty interesting. This is the soil test for the 90 yards of dirt I filled the greenhouse with. I'm not use to such low numbers but this is what I'll be aiming for from now on. My 1756 is day 35 today and taping 338 OTT and 859 pounds. Light years ahead of anything I've ever grown!! She's been well above 40 pounds a day for 15 days now and averaged 49 a day over the past 5 days.

Monday, August 1 View Page
After a little confusion taping my 2009 this morning I thought today was day 35 for my 1756 Jolivette. Today was day 34 so I'll report back tomorrow her true day 35 measurements.;) I think the excitement is getting the best of me! lol

Day 35 for the 2009. Just crawling along at 21 pounds a day over the past 5 days. Plants struggling with a leaf disease. I've been using copper to control it from spreading and it's slowed the spreading but you can see it moving through the plant. She's just a touch over 500 today.

Saturday, August 6 View Page
I'm calling her the Vince gourdzilla for now. She looks just like a baby version of Vince's fruit from last year. The photos don't really show how low and wide she's becoming. I'm just happy at this point to have a fruit going on this plant.

Sunday, August 7 View Page
Early morning day 40 taping. Ricks 1756 bolder producer is 165cc, 96ee, 104ss for an estimated weight of 1065 pounds. After the taping I sprayed her down with my weekly fungicide, covered all but the stem area now I'll be taping every 7 days from here on out. She's slowing down but not much. Averaged 42.8 pounds over the past 5 days. My pumpkins always gain well early but drop off really quick this time of year. I've learned a few things the past couple years and let's see if we can bring her weights down slowly this year.;) Stay together my sweet thing, stay together!!

Tuesday, August 9 View Page
Rumors were flying around that I was sandbagging the past couple days. Well,, here she is all taped out and with a lose tape. Lol I have stumps much bigger then this!!!

Had a patch visit from KC Kevin on here yesterday. Him and I will be putting a new weigh off together for us southern growers. After 16 years Stuart Shim is taking a break and stepping down from pumpkinmania. As soon as he told me this I called Kevin and we now have a site and all is slowly coming together. Pulling in sponsors has probably been the hardest part but even that's working out. The weigh off date is Saturday September 24th at 11:00am. The location is about a 15 minute drive east of tanaka farms where we use to have the weigh off. The address is- Irvine Park Railroad 1 Irvine Park Road Orange, Ca. 92869 If anyone has any questions please email me at medunn16@yahoo.com I'll update as prize money and new info becomes available.

Weekend update. Here's the 2009 about half way through the season. Slow and steady is all she's got. Just over 700 and I think she may squeeze her way to a 1000. The leaf disease isn't progressing fast and the copper sprays seem to be helping with that.

Hey Rick,,,, she feels like a rock!! If I can some how get around pulling a Chris Dunn or Joe I'll be one happy grower! Lol

Still running and burying the 3 secondaries directly behind the fruit. I may have a couple more weeks of this then I'm out of room. I'm doing this in hopes of some later season growth that I normally don't get.

So some how some way my fruit was still doing a 1/4 inch a day. I guess it was those secrete Ameleo feedings I was doing. I was going to let her grow another day or two then this morning when I went out to check I noticed this,,, a bear claw mark!! Well,,, maybe a raccoon but man,,,, I was just happy that's all they did. Of all my fruit,,,,, they had to bite and scratch this one. Lol

There's she is!! I may not have won the Master P. Q-Tip challage but I'll take it!! It's now the 5.11 Dunn grown from the 8.41 MacCoy! And a California state record!! If I'm a 1000 pounds under the state record pumpkin I guess this will have to do. Lol

Porkchops not the only one enjoying these NPK products. Between the RAW line and Rons myco, I've had a pretty good year! I've fed these products with each watering throughout the whole season. Some call it spoon feeding, others call it trickle feeding,,, what ever it is the plants really like it! I use to do all my feedings for the week in one day then wouldn't feed until the following week. I will be sticking to this feeding program from now on. 3 days and a wake up until weigh day!!

Here's the last pumpkin of the year. She made the rounds at my kids school now she will be at a local water treatment facility for the remainder of her life. I hade issues with this plant from the very beginning. There was a leaf disease that was controllable with copper but slowly took her out. Bummer because it was a 2009 I received as a gift from a good friend. I tried but could never get her to do more then 20ish pounds a day. She taped at 910 and went 1003 so a nice amount heavy. The cross is 2009 X 1756 Howell. I already have the greenhouse cleared out, I may add a thing or two then I'll till next week and get a cover crop planted for the winter. 2017 here we come!!!

Winter has been treating Southern California nice this year with more rain then we've seen in over 5 years! We're all just hoping it keeps up. This drought has been rough on all our water supplies. The mustard crop is about 6 weeks now and looking to flower in the next couple weeks. We're expanding the greenhouse to 60' X 45' this winter. The plants were really tight last season and need to be spread out. This should help with the powdery mildew,,,, the overlapping leaves last year was tough. Happy New Years to all and wishing everyone a monster or two in 2017!!!!
