Other than genetics, is there any reason for pumpkins to grow flat/blobby? I'm wanting to grow nice, decent-sized, round ones next year and was just wondering what nutrients/supplements play a role in this?

more genetics than anything. Nutrients just play a role in the overall health of the plant and pumpkin and maximizing its genetic potential. you could grow seeds that are the result of two perfectly shaped pumpkins and you could end up with flat and blobby. Inherent risk.

There is some evidence silica can strengthen leaves also fruit i think. Strawberries and peppers are the crops that come to mind. Crops that suffer losses from lodging are also ones where you might look for info. But even with all that cell strength science you could probably still grow a pancake.

Ok. Thanks. I got some good seeds lined up for next season that came from nicely shaped and colored pumpkins. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some things that I needed in my nutrient arsenal to help grow a nice, round pumpkin. I know part of it is just luck too...

truth is, when it comes to the final NEED for a pumpkin, the bigger around it is, the circumference, the bigger the area is for carving a face into---just a thought;
...always a bright side when it comes to pumpkins, lol---eg
