I don't know if this is really a question as much as a affermation of what I understand.

Crossing (genetics) in pumpkins is much easier than tomatos. With a pumpkin you do it in the process of growing. Tomatoes are not crossed because it is hard to pollinate a mega bloom. Ya? (Don't touch it, twist it, move it....don't even look at it). Crosses will almost never be from a huge tomato because you are growing for size (fused mega bloom). For pollination single bloom is best. A majority of crosses are made during winter for this reason.

This also makes it tricky to chase logged genetics as you will have an off year with a 3oz tomato to get the seeds for your cross.

i wanted to find the origin of the megazac

typing megazac does not work, but i found it. It helps that I was the one that entered the info.

1.2 Konieczny 2016

yes, the majority of crosses were during the winter

does wixom ever pop in ?

Ya that site is a mess. I would love to get in there and clean it all up so many errors. The pumpkin one is soo much better, again tho the crosses don't get logged in the weigh offs so there is a bit of disconnect along genetic lines.

All of my crosses are done during the summer, very easy to do.

Hello dan. Are your crosses done separate from your compition tomatos/plants? I assume yes since it looks like trying to successfully cross a mega bloom would be very hard.

i believe the big marley was done during the summer also...rebel would have to verify

I drink deeply from the tree of knowledge. It helps that I have grown regular tomatoes for years. I've done a lot of mad scientist cloning stuff.

i checked out the worldclassgardening offering...somewhat seems off to me. Udos Karkos can verify it

Agreed, For someone to make hybrid crosses it takes quite a good deal of forethought and also knowledge and skill. I am not normally one to shy away from any horticultural challenge but so far I have found myself way too busy and my interests to spread out to attempt top do it right. I have a lot of potential tomato crosses in my mind that I would love to try, but so far have not had the time to do them. The winter pollination project makes a lot of sense.
More time and a controlled environment to make the crosses. I would really need to know and trust a grower to believe that his seeds are a true cross and done correctly.

Hey scott i just posted the family tree on the Megazac, megadom and wixom slammer that i made back in 2016. This should help you

Sorry i forgot to say that i posted the family tree of the 6.23 Megazac in my diary.

Also im out of my 6.23 Megazac but i still have plenty of the 6.13 Megazac and the 5.61 Megadom left if you are interested. Just give me a email at ckon56@sbcglobal.net

you have gotten me all confused chris...but at least I remember the wixom slammer now. I wonder when the last time one of them was grown..that might make it into my twenty.

You growing under any lights this year?

1/7/2022 10:29:41 PM

under my failing memory..i am thinking that the 6.13 was the MegaDom and the 5.61 one was the wixom slammer. The megamuttD was a cross with the MegaDom as the female and the MegamuttZ was a cross with the MegamuttZ as the mother...you broke all the rules of crosssing...I think I my MegamuttD F(?) is the largest..maybe spaziani had the largest MegamuttZ...just guessing..certainly not certain.

i believe the delbrut was the first time i made a succesful winter cross...that was delicious x brutus magnum.Reed Thomas? grew a yellow one..how that happened i have no idea. Maybe Willie is still in contact with Reed. Big Marley was Domingo x Big Zac. Somewhere in my seed pile..I have a cross that Marv made many years ago, i cant remember what it was....my life crashed before i had a chance to grow it out...he said he was unimpressed with it. What other crosses are there...Dan ' S do not count, because they are not public...Sorry Dan, don't take offense

No im not growing any tomotoes in my bacement this year. My light space is all filled up with my house plants do to my plant eating cat !!!

I always did my crosses indoors because i wanted to make my crosses as pure as possible. And yes single flowers are much much easier to cross polinate than a megaboom. The problem with a megabloom is that it is often hard to clearly see the pistol in the flower to pollinate it. The pistol is wrapped into its own petals and its own pollen and tomatoes will self pollinate most of the times. Yes you can cross pollinate outside but do to wind and other insects the flower can be contaminated with unknown pollen. Its also best not to have eating tomatoes near by because they can cross with your giant tomatoes and mess up the seeds the following year.

I did a cross pollination demonstration in my 2015 diary. Check it out if you won't to see how i did my crosses. The demonstration is the first posts in January

why do you think that the big marley has outperfomed the wixom slammer? I am thinking it has...could be wrong. They both are domingo-bzac

I just use the little nylon tea bags to protect from cross pollination, they even have the little drawstring to secure it, can't get much easier.

good idea for a pollination cover....i just pulled a green tea bag out and am looking at it...dissecting it becomes a hollow tube. Need some blossoms to try it out...is 6 hours a bit late to expect flowers?

Wixom or Dan wouldn't you need to demasculate them before the pollen is ripe? Otherwise you can never be sure you haven't selfed the tomato in the demasculation process.

You need to pick a flower that is just opening no more than 30% open. Young enough were you don't shake the pollen off when cuttings off the anther cone. If the flower is 50% open or more the pollen may start folling off while cutting off the anther cone and cause self pollination. So be very careful

1/8/2022 5:41:46 PM

Dan Sutherland

Walla Walla Wa.

It's easy just to do it to an unopened blossom, that way you know for sure that there isn't going to be any problems.

1/8/2022 5:56:21 PM

Dan Sutherland

Walla Walla Wa.

I also just remove the anther cone completely, using tweezers, they'll usually come right off nice and clean like. Wait until you try cherry tomatoes, that's MUCH more difficult, they are SO TINY and delicate.

Im not sure my eyes are good enough for the cherry tomato crossing. lol The tea bag idea is brilliant you can get them off the net (unfilled with tea) for cheap.
