Mike Parenty has introduced a new tomato variety which he has chosen to name Canadian. In the year 2000 Mike’s brother met a Portuguese grower who had been living in Rhode Island and who had grown a “very large” tomato which he referred to as Canadian Big Boy. Subsequently it was found that there were no varieties named Canadian Big Boy. Burpee was offering a hybrid tomato they had named Big Boy in the US but there seemed to be no connection between the two. Canadian could now be considered to be an heirloom at this point. Mike was given the seeds to grow by his brother. He has subsequently grown the tomato off and on for nearly 20 years, mostly in 25 gallon containers. His largest tomato so far was a 3.81 pounder grown from a single blossom and another single blossom that made it to 4.91 pounds. Mike believes this variety has potential and especially so if more growers try it and pollinate some megablossoms. I believe it is certainly worth a try and its availability also will give some new genetics to try in some of the crosses we make. Mike goes by the name “Greenbud” on BigPumpkins and can be reached at mczjm18@gmail.com I started some Canadian seeds in mid July and have several decent tomatoes on the vine using these seeds. I will weigh the largest in a day or so. These are single blossom tomatoes. These seeds were found by Mike in a manner similar to Domingo.

Thanks marv ! Yes if you have the space give these seeds a try , I need your help to get this variety in the dirt ! And see what you think ? They are easier on BER probably because they grow slightly slower ! The 3.81 Was a 52 day mater, the 4.92 was a 55 day mater , both were grown on the same plant at about 26 inches up ! You will get the biggest tomato’s between 24”-48”. Anyway I’ve never culled down to one single tomato so I don’t know there full potential ! I do know when I let them go I get a plant full of 2+ to 3+ lbs maters and that’s in 25 gallon containers , or about 20 lbs off the plant ! So with all the experience you guys have with pruning and cultivation techniques it could be something special ! This variety will be in the seed exchange this year ! U can get them that way , Or email me . Also I’m going to have a competition like wixom grower did , with same payout ! 1 for Canadian variety , and 1 for the two crosses ! Which are Caningo ( 5 spots left ) and canwixom about 15 spots ! Thanks mike p mczjm18@gmail.com

Marv, I can send you some of my F2 deformed Porterhouse seeds if you want to grow them next spring. I've got a nice deformed tomato ripening now. I'll post a picture of it when I pick it for seeds.

Thanks Wile. I have grown Porterhouse in the past and could not get much out of them. Burpee said they would be great but for me they were not. What generation are your seeds? Isn't Porterhouse a hybrid variety?

I'd be interested in this Canadian adventure, if your ok with a rookie learning curve, and have the seed stock to spare a few. Sounds like a good variety to cut my teeth on.
