Hey folks,

I'm looking to join the gang, and try a few crosses this year and potentially looking to recreate a BZ and domingo cross (aka @Garden Rebel's Big Marley).

I've never done it before but I've seen various diary entries including Chris' giving the how to guide!

Potential cross ideas below - but does anyone have any opinions if you should look to use the 'proven seed' or the big offspring in the cross?

E.g. in the below, first thought is to use the parent seed like the 4.22 Daho, but i could use the offspring the 8.07 Daho itself? Same with the Hill)

5.95 Konieczny (grew 9.44 Sutherland) x 4.22 Daho (grew 8.07 Daho)

5.95 Konieczny (grew 9.44 Sutherland) x 5.175 Hill (grew 7.66 Hill, 6.27 dmg Hill, 6.13 Hill)

Any thoughts?

I may also try a back cross on @Garden Rebel's Big Marley with the Domingo or one of the BZs above - maybe decide which once we're seen it growing and know more on traits.

Given my lack of trying this before - i make no promises however, but if i can, i'll give a go. :)

I am uncertain as the genetics of these tomatoes. The Konieczny is for sure a Domingo. The 4.22 Daho I think is a Big Zac offspring though the parentage is not available on the GPC weight site. As an example though, the Domingo is an heirloom tomato and as such should be stable. The family generation of the Hill tomato and the variety are? If you make the first cross it will essentially be a cross between a stable Big Zac and an heirloom Domingo. The resulting seed should really be no different than any other cross between a stable Big Zac, at least F5, and an heirloom Domingo. Hope that helps. Creating a new seed is difficult if you want to play it out to where you have a stable new seed. If you are interested in seeing what the F1 will grow as that is one thing. To make a stable seed you will have to grow the seed through 5 generations selecting out the desirable plant each year to take the new seed from. This involves 5 growing seasons and a lot of plants. More than I was willing to take on so I quit making crosses beyond F1.

Hi Marv,

The 4.22 Daho & 5.185 Hill are both Big Zac. As a fyi:

5.175 Hill 16 runs:
5.3 MacCoy 14
4.57 MacCoy 13
5.07 Boudyo

while 4.22 Daho 17 runs:
3.52 Daho 2016 (i don't know further than that).

However, while all the F1 seeds on a given cross will be stable (e.g. from that same tomato) - I do believe that F1s from different BZ and different Domingos will recombine differently - and therefore different F1 crosses between the same varieties will have variation, even if the seeds from each of their own F1 tomatoes will be stable if that makes sense.

I'm not currently anticipating growing out beyond F1 as like you say, you need time and space to do proper selection which i don't think i can do justice with at present.

Good luck. If you grow out the seeds and happen to get a 10 pounder put me down for some seeds. That would be 2021.

Great enthusiasm and good luck! Whatever you do you can't go wrong with Chris's "how to" guide in his old diary post. That's how I learned. Let us know what you crossed and your progress.
