I grow in the south about 4 ft from Hell's kitchen. We have 90°-105° days pretty much the entire fruiting season. Plus we have high humidity. What variety has done the best for you guys when it's hot? Also as a follow up question: Do you think it would hurt to grow in semishaded area?

I am uncertain as to a variety that would be good for you. I would suggest that you go to your local garden store and talk to someone there. They know what is selling and how well people do with it. As far as shade, I would say absolutely. I would buy some shade cloth, maybe one that shields your plants from 40% of the direct rays of the sun if you are not already growing in a shady spot. Tomatoes can do well with indirect sun too. It all counts. I use a shade cloth in Pennsylvania over part of my garden. Tomatoes do not need direct sunlight all day long and they do quite well under a shade cloth. In one of the Godfather movies the old boss was growing tomatoes under cheese cloth and I think that was in New Jersey. Remember those big green tomatoes? I loved the movie.

Porkchop

My vote would be Megazac...if you can get a good blossom set...hotter than heck here last year and the plants loved it...fruits grew many days 50+...just no good blossoms to work with ...Domingos flashed very early (32 days?) for me in the heat...Domingos were bigger though...so who knows...wouldn’t hesitate to plant in partial shade so long as there is at least a few hours of direct sunlight...

Lol... Big moon sandbag the competition !!!

Jlindey i agree with porkchop. The megazac and domingo do well in the heat. I also think rich organic soil will help keep the soil moist witch helps keep the soil cooler in the heat.if you have all day sun then i would probably try a shade cloth but i never used it before and i live in michigan. We get about 10-20 days of 90° weather in the summer.

I would consider Delicious for the south. Gordon Graham's former world record was a delicious grown in Oklahoma.

For the casual tomato grower, is there a way to find what variety the giant tomato seeds are if not included on the package lineage?

The gpc weighoff list for tomatoes is one way to find out the veriety of your tomato. The last column may list the veriety but not everyone lists the veriety on it.if their is no veriety listed on it it most likely is a bigzac they are about 85% of all gaint tomatoes grown.
