Tomato 10 Pound challenge

The 10 pound challenge is a spinoff of the new world record we did in the past.
The reason behind this challenge is to better our hobby, plain and simple and to maintain this train of thought; we are being forced to set up a few rules that will need to be adhered to.
1)If and when you feel you have a contender, you will be required to notify myself or a GPC rep for your area at least 3 weeks prior to weighing your fruit.
2)You will need at least one rep of our choice to accompany you when the fruit is weighed and to document the event.
3)You will need to disclose the seed and your growing practices along with a full presentation at the upcoming GPC convention for the year you achieve this milestone
4)You will also be require to relinquish at least 25% of the seeds to be used by all clubs and the GPC . This can and should be done immediately after the weighing of the fruit.
5)You must agree to a 1 year moratorium for directly selling seeds to the public or until the last club auction of that year.
6)The prize money will be offered to the first person to break the 10 pound barrier. If the grower does not adhere to the rules or opts out, then and only then will a second 10 pound fruit be considered.
7)There is and will only be one winner

Beginning with the 2019 growing season we will be offering a consolation prize of $500.00 to the largest, $200.00 for second and $100.00 for third grown for the year and does not break the 10 pound barrier. Again sharing of growing techniques and seeds will fall into the parameters to be awarded the prizes. We will be more lenient on rules for this prize and will work with the growers. If any grower opts out of this then the next in line will replace them.
We will also have 1 (one) hidden weight prize in each of the pound categories from 3 pounds on up to 8 pounds. This will be a gift certificate for products and will be fully disclosed before the end of May 2019
Just to be totally clear: 10 pound plus tomato prize is $3,000.00 payable at the GPC conference
Subsidiary prizes will be handled on a per grower basis.

Is this a GPC event or Eddy z event? Just asking. Either way it's a great thing.

Is soaking a tomato in a saline solution to preserve it until a weighoff banned?

Chris good question and in fairness we will go with one prize per person or team thanks for that.

I am the major sponsor of this event with the blessing of the GPC.

Wile I don't know much about the soaking deal, but if I had a 10 pound contender, I wouldn't be soaking it in anything.

I am hoping in due course and in time we can get other companies and or private individuals to pick up a fruit or vegetable category and run with it like we have set this up.

Hard to get excited... no follow through on the prize for last years tomato competition.... If I grow a wr I’ll be selling the seed through a third party.

Can’t trust iceman/gpc. Have resigned myself that I will never receive the $200 prize for my team competition win. Call me what you want but I’m outta here.

The gpc has been going in the right direction. But... if you can handle some criticism, Eddy, I think you should step down and step away from the gpc. I think the attack on Marks Mixes was destructive, and I think a real sponsor like Campbell’s could put up $10,000 for this 10 lb tomato competition.

I find it hard to believe that someone is looking a gift horse in the mouth. In the army we called this shtting in your own mess gear. Very destructive behavior. Be nice. We are better than that. You are better than that. Brandon, you don't have the least understanding when it comes to what Eddy is about, not the least. Campbell's is as interested in our tomatoes as Libby's was in pumpkins. Glenomkins you need to say to Iceman that you are sorry. Iceman is out there working for the tomato growers. He is and has been very generous with both his time and his finances. He has been most supportive of tomato growers. And as far as Mark and his mixes are concerned, you need to go back and look at all of the posted information. You really owe Eddy a big apology. You are so poorly informed. And you need to work out your last year's genuine problem with Porkchop as he has taken on the blame and has agreed to make it right. Get with it Glen. Forgive and forget and be nice. Lets put the emotions aside and take a step back. This should all be about trying to grow bigger tomatoes and sharing seeds and information and supporting one another in the quest.

I like this rule-

#3. You will need to disclose the seed and your growing practices along with a full presentation at the upcoming GPC convention for the year you achieve this milestone.

If you can't attend the Convention or are too shy, then send in your presentation with a friend or get a GPC rep to present it. Sharing information is one of the reasons for the success many have enjoyed in this sport of growing giant veggies. The only variety that hasn't kept up to that train of thought in the last couple years is the tomato category. The top grower has no problem accepting the prize money from the GPC, but is very tight-lipped about his growing techniques & products he uses. That idea goes against everything the GPC stands for, so I'm glad to see that included in the requirements.

Keep up the great work.

You know I get this time and time again and it really has no bearing on anything nor does this bother me, just someone venting so go for it, I'm good and hope you feel better.
As for Mark's mixes and the history. After talking with Mark in Portland, I'm 100% done and pretty sure he is too.
I'm a 100% Trump supporter too, so you want to go after me about that, I'm good.

As for this tomato Challenge, it's not new, This is pretty much the same deal we have had for years. Dan McCoy was the first recipient when he broke the world record, we changed up the rules to help the hobby and the clubs.

And lastly, I'm not on the GPC board. Haven't been for quite some time. But I am a supported and a supporter of growing giants. no more no less

All sounds great eddy! Only thing I would say is three week warning is a lot, tomatoes only grow for about sixty days. So that much of a warning may create a bunch of false alarms or missed opportunities. But at any rate thank you for supporting the tomato growers!

This is so we can get the logistics in place, find someone to attend and also make sure we have everything for Guinness also. It would not be public knowledge. I'd rather get a maybe call than a Oopps we missed it

Yes 3 weeks advance is hard to do but if a tomato is measuring about 20" at day 20 you have a tomato on pace to do around 7lbs or better and then you have about another 20-25 more day to grow after that !!! So i sugest to try and get a 20 day measurement and try to estimate the pace of your tomato from their !!!

If I didn’t think you were strong enough to take it Eddy, I wouldn’t dish it. My apologies for dropping all political correctness and attacking based on assumptions. If I was any of you, I’d tell me to shut up, so that’s what I’ll do.

Marv, I agree with you about Libby’s and pumpkins, but I disagree about Campbell’s. If the gpc made even the smallest effort to reach out to Campbell’s, I think we might all benefit. Speaking only for my a hole self, $10,000 is what would get me to really care about hitting 10 lbs. I care about folks besides myself too, (hard to believe...) and if Campbell’s was on board, and sent an internal email, and an email to their suppliers, informing their employees and suppliers, perhaps a Twitter or Facebook post, I think we’d magically see the number of growers on here double, or perhaps it would go viral amongst gardeners. In the big scheme of things, hardly anyone knows about the gpc. Campbell’s is way bigger than Libby’s, and it’s such a small amount of money to them. Eddy might actually like to take a break from financially supporting... certain ungrateful a holes. I wouldn’t hold that against him one bit.

Anyone who has a wallet with anything in it wants to spend their money wisely... I’m sure he does too. But I’ve made enough assumptions for at least a week or so. ...Countdown to the next time I fall on my own sword begins now.

Nestle owns Libby’s and it’s 8 x bigger than Campbell’s. So... my bad. More assumptions... It’s not hard to be smarter than Glenomkins. I set the bar nice & low.

Brandon
Campbell's, Libbey's, Ford, Toyota, Bank of Nova Scotia, and I can give you countless more names of company's we have approached. We made a promotional video to present to these company's. It's all been tried and tested and no luck.
Funny thing you should realize and it's been brought to our attention time and time again is the fact these company's research who they sponsor. Pretty hard to hide the fact when they find posts of people slamming the GPC or not trusting the GPC, kind of puts a damper on thing. Remember once you hit post, It's out there forever.

Now you saying you aren't interested unless you could win $10,000.00 is pretty much what I would expect from a few growers because for some and very few, it's about the money. To the rest of the growers its not about the money and never will be. It's about the friendships, learning, sharing and achieving. This is what this contest is about and who its for.
Now since there isn't enough at stake here for you Brandon, I will take that as a statement you won't be participating and that is total your choice and I will exclude you from any of the available prize structures.

Thank you Eddy for supporting the GPC and all growers. This tomato contest has nothing to do with the GPC. It is not a GPC contest. It is Eddy's contest. It is Eddy's money. Thus he can make up the rules as he sees fit. Brandon why attack anyone who is working hard for all of us? You have no skin in the game. If you do not like Eddy's rules do not play. If you want to put up $10,000 go ahead and make the rules as you like. It will be your contest. Until then just make a decision to play or not play. Stop attacking Eddy or anyone else who is/are trying to do something nice for all of us.

Eddy, forget the money. If I grow a 10 pounder you can put me in a dress, call me Sally, and make me cluck like a chicken on the GPC stage. I'd be so ecstatic I wouldn't know who I am.

...not that I ever have done that or anything....
