I have a gourd that is starting to really take off. Does the fruit need to be secured somehow at the top of the trellis? I've been looking for some pics but haven't seen anything clear yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I tie them up with a piece of quarter inch rope. Something thick enough to not kink the stem,

Ok. Just literally tie the stem to the top of the trellis then?

If it's a straight pull, you should be fine. If not, don't laugh, knee high stockings work wonders. They are soft and flexible and will keep the stem from kinking.

It also helps to pad the trellis. I have cattle panels at the top and use foam pipe insulation to prevent kinking of the stem. Last year I attached 2x4s to the trellis with screw eyes and heavy cord and tied them to posts driven in the ground. Then I taped the gourds on to the boards with electrical tape. The tape would stretch as they grew and had to be re-done several times. This kept them from swinging in the wind.
