Could this be the problem for my wilting leaves? The leaves further down all the vines don't really wilt and by the evening everything bounces back and looks perfectly fine.

The brown part isn't soft - I've had a fan on it for the past few days. Is this stump rot?

Any suggestions? Stuff to be careful about? Lay off the watering near the stump?

I appreciate your help very much

That plant is grafted right? Crowns on grafts can be tricky. Usually they collapse suddenly and completely. Not slowly like yours. IT is definitely a vascular issue going on. Not sure if it is a disease or something else going on.
Have you checked your roots? I have had melon plants get voles under the plastic and the roots get eaten. The plants react just like yours are doing. Check for tunnels under the plant, it would feel abnormally soft and tilled around the stump. I had a bushel gourd go down one year because rats were underneath the plant damaging the root system with their tunnel making. The plant wilted in mid July. I took care of the rats and then I flooded the plant with water to help collapse all the tunnels that were drying the roots out. The plant came back to health. To date my biggest bushel gourd was from that plant. A 199" ott.

Thanks - I will take your advice. It’s actually traditional - not grafted. I got a really good melon on this plant, so would hate to lose it !

Put some peroxide on it to kill bacteria then paint it with daconil or captan. It should be okay if you keep your soil moisture correct.
