What is the key to getting good tasting watermelon? I have had some years in which they have a flavorless taste. Thanks for any help.

Lots of sun and warmth. In a cloudy wet year they won't be as flavorful.

I'm not the expert here on melons, but I have grown enough for eating to know that picking a ripe watermelon is an art.

I agree with Big Moon, without the sun and heat, the sugars just won't build as high. I like to grow on black plastic here, as it adds a little warmth to the soil and fruit to help out.

All about the way it sounds when you thump it and the spot on the bottom as well. The white spot will start to turn yellow when it is physically ripening, after that, it's an experience move you just gotta practice.

Also, I feel variety does have a little to do with sugar content in melons.

It is kind of like growing really tasty & sweet wine grapes. The best vintages are made in warm sunny & dry years. And some locations are much better than others for those particular type conditions.
