this is probably a dumb ?, but should i direct the main or let it grow any way it desires. space isnt an issue. thanks Bill...

There are no dumb questions on here Bill. Personally, I like to keep my mains growing straight away from the stump early on. I want my vines to spread out to capture as much sun as possible. Later on, after a melon has set, it no longer seems important to me as the vines have grown large and size control is then the issue.
