Might be a terrible idea but... roofing tar? Latex might be less than ideal. This might be horrible advice!

I used a plastic primer in dark gray then painted mine black years ago, they still look great and no green algae. Being a painting contractor this is how we'd paint any surfaces like our pumpkin barrels. You can spray paint them black but they will peel much sooner.
