My secret is that I moved away from Kansas in search of a better climate to grow (and live) in. I moved to Northern California 33 years ago from Manhattan, KS. When I started growing the California state record was 1104 & the Kansas state record was just over 400 lbs. Recently I moved to Eugene, Oregon. In the past 22 years someone who lives within 15 miles of my new patch has won Half Moon Bay 9 times. Location matters a lot!

Kerry Gross set a personal best last year and almost a West Virginia state record for giant pumpkins. He told me that he had read about growers doing No. 1 in their planting hole. So he figured that doing No. 2 in his planting hole would work twice as well. Just throwing it out there. Your mileage may very.

Well I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say or not but lets throw caution to the wind "Tony, a well known Watermelon head and current Kansas record holder, claims that he uses only the freshest horse manure and he uses it throughout his entire patch. But here's the catch you actually have to catch and bury it with your bare hands! Says that this causes a chemical reaction with the roots of the watermelon plant!" And that ain't no bs well I guess I mean that ain't no Horse!%$*!

And i never bury my vines; I'm too lazy! However, every year i swear to devoting the time to the WEED KILLING that will enable me to devote the OTHER time i swear i'll have to burying the vines, complete with Mycorrhizal inoculation! Few things are better than working on a pumpkin plant that has no weeds within nor around it;
