Just curious what people are thinking the next hot seed will be like the 2145 McMullen, 1911 Urena, 2009 Wallace, 1725 Harp and so on. We obviously don't know yet, but I am thinking 1501 vanderwielen. what do you think?

Not enough 1501s left to match the 2145 I dont believe.I could be wrong. Im growing the 1501 this year & I will cross it with my 2043.5 Clementz. It was 466 OTT & perfectly shaped cross it with heavy & ORANGE (1501)and you have perfection.Im looking at 300 acres to grow on tomorrow morning.I hope I can find a good spot on such a small farm. LOL

I am also thinking the 1990 Marintzer Kansas state record has potential considering where it was grown.

I like the number of selfs that weighed over a ton that were grown this year and may try to get a few for speculation. For seeds that are proven, I'm seriously considering growing either the 2283 or the 1885 Werner next season.

Been plateau'd for too long there are no standouts... but I still like the 2051 Marshall cross. I think there is WR potential there.

1542 Urena, 1450.6 Fifolt. Both grew big from limited planting
727 Garofano, 1686 Stelts. Both of these grew over a ton from limited planting.
How many good growers plant these will determine if they are going to be great but they are not big themselves which cause a lot of growers not to plant.
Paton boys have obtained a 1542 so that is a plus.

Hence the advantage of a track record - the 727 is a self X a self - Hybrid Vigor? i'll have what HE's having! eg

I'm not sure how many 1875 Mendi seeds are out there but the Patons are doing great with it.

Hard to judge seeds by the grow of the general population.I have found a lot of locations are loaded with disease issues Soil borne. Mild to heavy will effect your potential.Lots of great seeds out there with 3000 lb potential.Weather, soil health,& soil nutrient level along with daily care all play a factor. My friend dan grew a 1704 lb pumpkin in the shade. No sun till after 2 pm everyday on plant. You must know the grow to really judge a seeds potential.I bet the 1990 is a great seed. But the mother would be the safer bet as cross can change the outcome good or bad its a crap shoot. If you struggle with getting the kins you desire? You might want to spend the $140 at western labs & stop growing blind. This is a new MUST for me.Pinching pennies dont get you there in this hobby

Always a fun topic. As mentioned the best cross may be under the radar and never get tried.Theres so many with uber potential that I'm not even gonna hazard to guess. Leif thats cheating going with a seed thats been out there a couple years already.

Maybe a little cheating. Also,7 of the top 10 have been selfed. Is self better? Each of the top 10 came from different seeds. My 2 guesses are based on pumpkins that most resemble the 2145 McMullen. If you combined the two together I think they would look exactly like the 2145.

1450.6 Fifolt...It grew the 2200 est Geddes. The Base was over a foot this and side walls we about 10" . Too bad a varmint chewed into it before it hit the scales.

Potential...yeah. It was 2200 with a month left to go. So it looks like it was on track to be similar to mobeymikes 2500 lber.

I believe the 1501 vanderweilen was picked very early also but I may be getting it confused with another pumpkin. Couldnt find the info. But if I remember correctly it was picked rather early too, hence the "only 1501" would have hidden its true potential but fortunately someone was paying close attention and made a good choice to try it.

I think some growers can see the shape or other characteristics of a pumpkin and guess that it has more potential than just what the scale says. Certainly being picked early can detract from an amature assessment... welcome to growing pumpkins its like guessing who will be the next sports legend. The most proven seeds will go for more, just watch the 2145 in the PGVG auction next week.
