HALF MOON BAY, CA (May 9, 2020) – Organizers of Half Moon Bay's 47th Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off today released the following statement regarding the 2020 event:

"First off, we hope everyone is staying strong and safe in these most challenging times."

"We'd like to share some good news. At this time, we'd like to make it clear to the competition growing community around the world, we are planning to hold the 2020 Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off on Monday, October 12 in Half Moon Bay as scheduled."

"As competitive growers are preparing soil, planting seed and tending to patches, we wanted you to have a clear understanding of our intentions and plans going forward."

"We'll be working closely with city and county officials on the parameters that will need to be put in place in order to hold the weigh-off, more than five months away."

"Due to the nature of the weigh-off, and the measures we can put in place, we believe we can conduct it in a safe manner for all and we feel strongly in the importance of holding the weigh-off because of the joy it always brings to so many and the uplifting hope that it will help foster in these difficult times."

"Of course, we are also monitoring pandemic-related developments and impacts and we recognize the uncertainty that comes with it."

"Stay tuned for more details as we forge ahead with great optimism."

Thanks for posting good news, anaid. I understand festivals having to close down, but it is nice to see a weigh-off planning on holding their event. A well thought out weigh-off should not be more dangerous than going to Home Depot or the grocery store.

Great news...after I finish growing the new Minnesota state record, I know there is at least one weigh I can go to. It is only 2000 miles away...but if it is the only choice.... So far one of the 3 local weighoffs has been cancelled. I hope more sites will weigh in on if they are still planning to have competition.

Ohio is much closer to me. I sent an email to the SCGA inquiring about Stillwater. Waiting for a response. Official weight with no crowd and no prize fund is better than not being able to weigh. We can not predict the future. Depending on what happens...October is really up in the air. So far...I think that Half Moon Bay and Hamilton will figure out how to get weights....Anyone else?

You might be surprised Wile...hydro nutrients in sand will work just fine :] Unfortunately..my lack of effort to put in soil heating cables and building a hoop house will offset that gain. This is May, time to dream big. The point of my post...I am hoping that some weighoffs will give a definite to growers that they have a place to shoot for. The weighoffs are important for many growers.

hmph...sandbox...I am up to 6% organic material in my giant pumpkin growing area...and I have 22% silt. I just need an easy method to crush that 22% a bit finer...and then I could have loam. Have fun growing Wile...hopefully there will be a local weighoff that we can meet again share stories. Are you interested in any pumpkin sprouts that took a bit too long to get out of the ground and are showing yellow on the cots.

My 2 2416's and 2 2016's are not available.

Altoona/River Prairie, Wisc. is about 2 hours from me Bob. It hasn't been cancelled yet. I was planning on going there.

Bob, I'm sorry about the sandcastle comment. You've been talking about your patch/sand box a while.
