Ok so I made the mistake of trimming everything to close to a pumpkin on my main vine and it started to rot and saving was not a option, so main was terminated. I do have 18 secondary’s though, So my question is what secondary would be best to try to set a new pumpkin. Example closet to the stump or Furthest away.

The 1st or 2nd furthest one out on the main. That way you can turn it to grow the way the original main was growing.

Rick already gave you the perfect answer. I am not sure what the logic would be to use a secondary closer to the stump than a secondary closer the end of the main.

That plant looks great.

Id set on a strong secondary near what will be the middle of your plant. The secondaries which are pushing tertiaries hardest or just the largest in a position that works for you.

ps I dont know if you culled that flower but it looks fine to me. I think the real issue is seeds in the blossom, or distortions in the shape of the pumpkin or stigma after pollination. I could be wrong. Maybe she just had a bad hair day :).

Go one closest to stump, and terminate growing tips on other secondaries. This will make it a main vine.

All other things being equal, you want to pick one near the middle of the plant. Sink/Source strength is distance based. If you go closet to the stump you're trying to pull all the energy the greatest distance from the growing tips ( the strongest current sinks)

I was wondering the same thing this year. Main vine snapped right after the first pumpkin that I had set. As a back up plan, I was wondering which secondary to us . . . a secondary far out on the main, or a really strong secondary close to the stump?

Further out is better than really close in in my experience. I think more importantly is how close the pkn is on the secondary relative to the main. I would take a pkn on a secondary halfway down the main if only a foot off the main vs a pumpkin at end of the plant, but 12 feet down the secondary. Closer to the main vine is better, but not one of the first few side vines off the stump.
