http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=280108. I think this is bigger than average. This is my second year growing so I don't have a lot of experience with stumps. This one is also foaming behind it. Is this something I should be really concerned about, and if so, what should I be doing different? I water everyday to include around 2ft from the stump itself to approximately 6ft diameter. Should I ease up on the watering in that area?

Your secondaries are absorbing more water than the plant can use and it has nowhere to go , this causes a back-up and a bacteria causes the stump to foam. This can lead to rotting that will travel down the main to the pumpkin. Ive only saved one out of five stumps doing this, you can cut off the stump to stop the bacteria from spreading,or cut open the stump at the lowest point on up to the foaming area remove any rot and spray with peroxide several times, keep a fan on it 24/7

Cut the stump in half so the foam drains out and keep a fan on it. You won't have an issue if you do This

Dont waste any time, you need t get it drained asap. Some very experience growers will slice through with a long fillet knife. I used that approach last year, but I waited too long. Mine started to get rot inside, so I had to open it up wider so I could get a spoon in there to clean out the rot. Hopefully you wont have any rot. It should be nice and green on the inside, no brown.
I know of other growers that will get a spade bit ( not sure what size, but I would immagine 3/8 or 1/2 inch), and drill a hole as low as they can get it to drain. Keep hole clean and open, get fan on constantly no matter which way you go. I have pics in my diary of my foamer last year of the process, under " zappa". Good luck, its growing well !

I looked in there closer, I'm going to take a good picture and post. But I must say it doesn't look good inside.

Upon further inspection, what it's done is split open. It's hollow inside. So what's my next step? Severe the whole stump?

It's hard to to tell by the pics you posted how bad the rot is. If the rot is bad it may be best to cut the stump off. I've tried to save a stump before and lost 1/4 of the plant. Now I just cut it off in order to save as much of the plant as possible. If you cut the stump cut out all brown discoloration as far as you have to, or it will continue to rot.

By the looks of the main that's left. There's alot of rot in there. Either you keep cutting until there is no brown or you add captan, sulfur and a fan to dry it out. In my opinion you its going to continue to rot, hard to tell how far it goes, but I'm guessing it goes further. If you cut out all the brown discoloration you may lose alot of plant. If you don't cut out all the rot it will continue rotting.

If you have a pumpkin on that plant, it will continue to grow even if you have to cut off half the plant as long as you have good rooting

I have had just 1 foaming stump, last year. I ended up cutting off the stump some main and secondaries. But it was too late, the infection reached the fruit and left me with 700# of rotting ooze. Since that I have been quick to amputate infected pats of plants if I have a good pumpkin gping.

Thank You everyone for their input on this one. My first stump amputation is complete. I did a secondary count, I lost 5 secondaries and I still have 24 secondaries feeding the pumpkin. So growing will continue as though nothing happened. Grow em big everyone.....
