if I use water that has been treated with a water softener will it harm the plants. if it does, will running that water through a filter correct the issues.

no it will not harm the plants. there should be no salt in your water after going through the softener. calcium and magnesium ions have a positive charge while the resin beads in the softener carry a negative charge.this way they attract. when the brine is added in regeneration, it pushes the calcium and magnesium ions off from the resin. then the salt is flushed from the tank into the drain. basic principal anyway.

But if you can bypass the softener, that would be even easier, it is what I do.

You'll be fine. I use it on my orchids 30+ and they don't mind it and trust me orchids are WAY more finiky than AGs :)

My water is softened also, never been a problem. I have very high iron in my well water. So I have more issues if it is not softened. Also I am a licensed plumber.

But there is no benefit to soft water ? If so wouldn't you want to save work and money on the softener

There is no benefit to soft water, unless you have very high levels of other minerals. Some homes may have a hose bib that comes off the main before the softener. You would have to follow your pipes back to find this out. Then you would not have to bypass softener.
