Over the last couple years I have developed a horrible weed problem in my patch. Has anyone used Surflan Pro? The info I have found says it should not be used where edible crops are grown. Since I am not going to eat a giant pumpkin that doesn't concern me. I'm wondering if it will harm the plant though. Seems to be no info out there on that question.

Does this control a weed that round-up doesn't? just wondering why you don't use round up.
I would be curious if it damages roots growing through the surface

Surflan is a pre-emergent weed control only. Roundup is a post-emergent weed control with no pre-emergent properties.

It looks like it is labeled for use on bulbs, trees, grasses, mostly perennials. I would be real hesitant to use it on an annual like pumpkins. A lot of pre-emergence herbicides work by killing off the roots on newly germinated seeds.

If you are looking for a safer, organic pre-emergence try corn gluten meal. It has the benefit of being 10% nitrogen. Maybe that along with glyphosate might help, Look out for some of the Roundup formulations that have residual control as they might be hard on pumpkins.

If your lawn is not treated with chemicals, you could try mulching with grass clippings. If you apply them thin, they won't heat up too bad, and they break down quickly. I sometimes do that along the new vines and by the time the leaves shade things out the grass is mostly gone.

I would be concerned that it may prevent the roots at your leaf nodes of taking root !!!
