I just read an article on msn.com about a bunker in the arctic that is designed to hold and preserve 4.5 million seeds. Here is the link, I wonder if there are any Atlantic giants not the collection!!

KPR, from what I have read in the past...what we now know as AG's...Atlantic Giants...are in the bunker, as are CC melons, and lots of other giant type seeds! Not postitive that this is true, but thinkin it is true! Peace, Wayne

There are about 1160 different cucurbita maxima in government storage in NY. Dills Atlantic Giant was donated in 1985. Also Grey Mammoth from Hungary in 1966. Most recently donated in 2016 were seeds harvested from Mammoth King. Seed acquired from the late Tom Knocke's collection that originally came from Gurney's Seeds back in the late 1970's - early 1980's

Maybe the government can send a seed request using a self addressed and stamped envelope to some of the top growers to update the vault. Inside the request, the government could write a little note telling about themselves, how long they've been growing and highlighting the potentials of doomsday.

It is not just for Doomsday. It is also a backup to the other seed vaults.
"Food security is a challenge in many developing countries. Crop diversity is the resource to which plant breeders must turn to develop varieties that can withstand pests, diseases, and remain productive in the face of changing climates. It will therefore underpin the world food supply. Also, the Seed Vault will ensure that unique diversity held in genebanks in developing countries is not lost forever if an accident occurs. A backup copy will exist in Svalbard."
"Norwegian law, promulgated prior to the establishment of the Seed Vault and intended therefore to apply more generally to research and use of genetically modified organisms in Norway, effectively prohibits importation of genetically modified seeds and their storage in Svalbard at this time."

Brotherdave that is interesting, I remember growing some of that Mammoth King from Gurneys back when I was a kid in the 80's. I never would have thought seed varieties could go from being in a seed catalog to lost forever in such a short amount of time. Places like Sandhill Preservation center have saved numerous seeds from extinction. Sandhill has such a wide variety of seed. It is incredible what they have to offer.
