I had a turf out my lure boxes, some lures had been won in competitions, some had been bought by mistake and some have just had their day.
I did however find some real old gems in the bottom.
Hedon timber rattlers
Jitter bugs
Crazy crawlers
lucky 13's
What would you find?

An old one out west would be the " scampi " used with my grandpa to catch calico bass. I still have a few but feel they would disintegrate if fished with.:)

I have a couple shadow boxes on display in my back TV room filled with my grandpas lures from the 1930s to 1970s. Some are even hand made from cork stuffed with horse hair. And yes, there is a 45 year old Jitterbug in one case. Luke

It's like a thick picture frame, but it's a case with a lid you can hang on the wall. I used tiny pins to hang the lures in the box for a display on the wall.

The other thing I did was take an old cedar log I found by the river and cut it in half long ways. I mounted his old reels on the knobby side of the log, and installed a hanger on the flat side I cut. I hung those 2 logs flush on the wall as well by the shadow boxes.

I've also made a wind chime that hangs outside out of various hard plastic crank baits I've found along the river banks over the years. It's amazing how much stuff comes out of trees after a big flood.

I'm kind of a fishing gear horder, lol

About a half dozen musky lures, a bunch of spoons, some spinner baits and crank baits and a bunch of crappie jigs and plastic bodies.

Many spinners, crank baits, and rapala's. Oldest ones I have are from Creek Chub Bait Company, from the mid 1930's.

I don't have any old lures in mine. But i will tell a few of you guys here that my favorite lure now , when the water is 50 degrees or less, is a blade bait. Many different types out there, some better than others. My go to is the Johnson thin fisher, in 3/16 or 1/4 oz. fishing them vertically from a boat is just incredible. I discovered this technique last Fall, and caught a mess of fish almost every trip. They work incredible on the ice too. Even catfish take them when ice fishing. I will post a few pics soon when i get good ice .

Ah, thats what I'm going to do with some of my older lures, it's a shame to leave them in the bottom of a box where no one can appreciate them.
One lure that is working very well for me is the Bass Pro Lazer eye shads. Eddy Z took us to a Bass pro in Vegas a few years ago and I got 20 but I'm down to my last three so need to find one in Niagra this March.
They are cheap and need to be as some work better than others.
There's a photo of one at the end of last weeks diary.

I have been collecting antique lures for around 30 years, I built a hutch in my dining room for the lures, but store most of the old ones in original boxes elsewhere. I have most lures from the 1890's through the 1970's. ian I can go to bass pro near me and get some for you? will post pic of some of my collection soon, seems there is a problem on bp posting.

Ian I would be glad to help you and look but I don't want to open that can of worms that have been sitting in there for the last thirty years. Have a good trip, and a great 2017.

At the bottom of my tackle box is a collection of salt water lures that I picked up on a family vacation to Houston. I haven't tried them yet on the lakes around here. I am thinking that by using the salt water lures I could give the fish here something that they haven't seen 100's of times before. Next summer watch out muskies.

Old Rapala's, jigs, 2 melted plastic worms, worm harnesses, big old double buffalo spinner (Muskies), trout spoons, spinner baits, rust, old line & much more. They are currently in a big ball inside the old tackle box after the box did a double axle off the top shelf last fall.
I keep a separate plastic lure tray/box handy for each variety we fish (pickerel, bass, musky/pike & one for ice-fishing for perch & trout). It's easier to handle, takes up little space & only has the lures I need for that variety of fish. So needless to say, the old tackle box doesn't get dragged out as much anymore.
The ice-fishing season is open. Go out & spend some quality time with some good friends. FISH ON!!!

Cheers,
Phil & Jane

Hope this year to be an epic fishin season. I have old lures from my pompo from the 1900's. A old fashion grasshopper cage that I saw at the antique fishin store went for $500... I wont use any of them in fear of loss.

Whats at the bottom of my tackle box? Too many lures that have never caught a fish lol. I have been an avid scuba diver for a long time. Through the years I have found more lures than I need. Unless it is a nice one in good condition, I just leave them on the bottom now.

I haven't checked my tackle box lately. There's likely, an assortment of Beetles Spins, Dare Devils, and Rapalas in there. I haven't done any fishing the past few years. Maybe I'll get back out there this year. If so, it will likely be from my 17' aluminum canoe.

My tackle box has turned in to a knapsack every since I converted to bobber and jig fishing for summer / winter steelhead. Its a lot easier to hike into secluded areas with and carries more beer! Finally cleaned it out after fishing the North Fork Lewis this last weekend and found a ton of jigs, leaders, and bobber stops I forgot I even had. Thanks for the great post!

I got rid of my old truck last week after 8 years of fishing and camping in it for a new one. When cleaning it out I found 1 old buzzbait with a completely dried up skirt, 2 dried 3.5" Smallie tubes, couple beer cans, and 1 pound of various snacks from my kids. I think I heard a growl and saw something move under one of the back seats so I quit cleaning then!

Off work and went smallmouth fishing today, we had a high of 14 and the rivers are frozen over on the edges. Hit a spring fed branch where the water stays warmer (compared to winter temps), and I only needed 1 lure... 3 inch tube with 1/8oz jig head sitting at a crawling pace on the bottom. Strikes were so subtle, 2x I didn't know I had a fish on. Good day all around.
