Today I just received my permit for small lot importation of carrot seeds. Still have to figure out PPQ form 508 which is green and yellow labels ..whatever those are for...but should not take too long. I have been in contact with Kevin Fortey who has agreed to be the UK contact for carrot seeds. If you wish to grow giant carrots this year, send an email to me at [email protected]. The seeds will be free this year. Please email me in the next week or so...am thinking of having only one shipment...for growers to be able to start plants in January.

You have " MAGIC " soil though, Q Tip!
I have a feeling we'll see a 2500 pound pumpkin coming out of that dirt in 2017!

I lived in Qtip ville many years ago. There are several areas the looked to be old flood zones. We had one just behind our house. My guess he is on one of the higher ones.

Are you sure you want a pound of seeds spence? Giant carrots must grow giant rabbits. I don't know if i would want a five mile radius of giant rabbits around me. My permit states that the seeds must be in packets less than 50 seeds each....50 packets maximum per shipment. I am expecting to be sending out packets of about 40 seeds to each grower that requests. When you email me..can you give your mailing address also. You then will be added to the list, so I will know how many packets Kevin needs to send to me.

Not sure why you are importing these seeds. They are readily available at pretty much any seed store in the US, Canada and Europe. These seeds are not genetic seeds with family trees like pumpkins. We all use store-bought seeds. The WR was grown using store-bought seeds. Pretty much any winter carrot (Red Intermediate, Flakkee, Berlikum) will do. Thousands of seeds for a buck or two.

Brad...New Red Intermediate is not available from stores in the USA. Your saying any seed will do...is like saying any store bought pumpkin seed will grow the largest. Last year I planted New Red Intermediate, Flakee and Berlicum. This year I am planting only New Red Intermediate. Of the seeds i received from the UK last year, they grew Dan's 12 pound carrot, Chris 11 pounder, and my best one. I believe genetics matters.

I'm not sure how much research you have done into heavy root vegetables, but heavy and long carrots and parsnips (and long beets) have always been grown from store-bought seeds in Europe. It is (pretty much) impossible to gain your own seeds from giant carrots or parsnips. Their weird shape usually causes excessive rotting in the second year when they should be producing seeds. For this reason we buy in fresh seeds. The seeds you just bought in the UK are not from a giant carrot. If you read the description, you will see that they are from a strain that grew a large UK carrot. They are simply store-bought seeds. David Thomas was very successful with Berlicum and Peter Glazebrook with New Red Intermediate and other growers in the past with Flakkee. All have grown carrots in excess of the 12lbs you mentioned. If you read the literature on this subject, you will find out that any "heavy-shouldered variety, of intermediate length" will do and that the trick is in the "technique and not in the seed".

I have done some research into carrot seeds. I prefer New Red Intermediate after last year of growing all three varieties. Those are not available here. The New Red Intermediate has been grown for long competition for many years. The seed producers of the competition seeds add the term "reselected" to their seeds. Which just means that they are choosing to bring to seed those carrots that show the best competition characteristics. Last year at this time, Brad, you didn't even include New Red Intermediate in your list of heavy carrots. And I notice you still have listed for sale seeds from your 8.79 2013 Flakkee carrot on WorldClassGardening.com.
