So, we started out with a fused main that split into two separate, healthy mains and we trained one of the two to be the main man main and one to be the secondary. Yet, they're both very aggressive, in fact, I think the secondary may be a little more aggressive. We have a pumpkin on the main (smaller but growing crazy) and one on the secondary (slightly larger and growing crazy), both are out about the same distance. My husband thinks we should keep them both. His thinking is that they're 2 separate plants because they do kinda act like separate plants...but I'm thinking BIG, not two. From your experience with fused vines that separate into two...what would you do to achieve the largest pumpkin? And really, at this point in time maybe its not worth even bothering with?

Thank You!
Betsy

I would prolly take the aggressive fruit this time of year....cut the end of the main and let the aggressive vine go...I would wait til day 19-20 to make the choice...either way make sure both have slack in the vine...grrrr

Betsy the one on the secondary will usually be the faster grower early but it will get passed up later by the one on the main. If you keep both neither will get as big as a single.

Hi Betsy

Its getting late in the season, recommend you set a fruit on eirher the main or a secondary if you havent already. Cut off the wimpy looking of the split vine

Thanks Fellas

Joe, I listened to you when you told me that years ago and found out for myself that the main will eventually beat out the secondary. Eric's (Buster's) point of view is coming more from a hydrological stand, and he does have a compelling point. Remember, they're both a main. You fellas can debate that Saturday. That secondary just kept nagging at me...I chopped it off today. Nothing ventured nothing gained, you know. This plant by the way is Gary Shenfish's 803...WOW!...it's grabbed the kids a couple times! Doesn't care for Chinese.

they will cause each other to not get as big as they both compete for plants resources.Having said that they don't hurt each other as much as you might thing. Guessing 5 to 15%
