Hi woody, most growers will put sand other there pumpkins it keep the water off the base you just keep adding sand as it grows.

I put some weed fabric down before I put the sand down. It makes fall cleanup go better. Some growers get other kinds of fabric or sometimes plywood.

woody, I use fiber cement board, mill fabric and sand, i am also using eps board under another with holes drilled in it. i just also pollinated a 1623 wallace on the 8th of August, after dealing with svb. plant has recovered so far, regrew and has a nice fruit growing like mad on a secondary. we should keep in touch with each other! i'm at DAP 6 and softball size. plant is really aggressive. congrats to you on the ride ahead!
