Hi everyone! To all my Ontario growers, I've been battling what seems to be a losing battle with cucumber beetles this year. Due to our ban on pesticides, I started off with Neem oil, didn't do anything. Tried garlic, was a bit of a deterrent, but still not helping. Finally I bought 10% permethrin (spider killer) and it seemed to work for a bit, except my plants take a bad hit every time I spray it seems. I haven't been using a super strong mixture, but it seems to burn the plant every time. I apply it to the entire plant and ground. Is it an application error on my behalf? If there's any other suggestions as to what to use since pesticides don't exist in Ontario any more, I would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Have recently seen malathion reappear on shelves..class 7, in my understanding doesn't required a licence if needed for good reason...biting beatles or a large in ground wasp nest on property should suffice if under lock and key;) all the best.

Any suggestions as to how often to apply the malathion and do I just spray the entire plant and ground? Thanks!

Years ago, I had a heavy infestation of cucumber beetles. I had success with Garlic Barrier, www.garlicbarrier.com , 3 Tbsp/gal. During infestation, you can spray this every 2 -3 days. Another product that I used successfully was Cedar Gard. www.agrienergy.net. It is interesting to read about how this product works. Good luck.

Have only used malathion years ago on ornamental shrubs...never on cuc.beetles on pumpkins but think they are on the list of controls...directins on label should be close but I'd 'lighten it up a little in this heat.

Spray in the evening whatever you use. Don't spray in the morning or during the day in this heat to prevent burning. The permethrin you used should work and shouldn't burn if you use a real light misting. If you spray til wet or runoff you will burn. Like Joel says, the malathion is available to homeowners behind lock and key at most places that sell insect control. It can legally be used on large trees, so remember that if they ask, but they almost never do.
