Splits happen. Don't worry too much about it. Just don't let it sit full of water. You might need a small hole to keep it drained out. The pumpkin to ready to harvest when it quits growing.

A pumpkin can stay on the vine a long time after it quits growing if the weather is cool. In hot August weather they will cook and rot a lot quicker. If you are looking to get every pound out of it for a weighoff, leave it on the vine as long as possible. Once they are cut off they dry out and lose weight. On the vine, they keep getting some moisture.
