Other than what you are doing, maybe a sheet draped over it to trap some of the ground air?...that's a tough one...I can't believe anything grows in Utah....

Do you use a white sheet? I have no idea if it will work for you in that arid and hot of a place, but maybe a sheet will help it trap moisture in the skin? Just thinking out loud....

Be VERYcareful when your fingers come close to the pkn...any lil nick or scratch, will grow as the pkn grows..a leaf blows by in the wind...major scar when the pkn is done! White sheets have been read about, I put up a small shade structure to protect from mid day sun! Peace, Wayne PS...no suggestions as to keeping skin soft, sorry!

I have placed cheap reflective car window shades on mine this year to reflect the heat, over top of my sheets. So far I am happy.

I'm curious as to how one of the proven genetic pumpkins that go orange with real smooth skin would do in arid Souther Utah. If they split on top and cantalouped, it might just be a product of your desert like environment. Best of luck.

most we have grown here have cantaloped.. but never split 1 yet.. going to be interesting this yr,, never had one ever growin the size of the one i got growin now,, moistined sheet i use on the fruit,, may have to make a concoction to put on the skin,, still working on ideas,, oils and lotion probably wont work,, as that would cover the pores and stop air into fruit skin,, lol
