How are people getting these 400 or 500 lb estimates on like day 25-28? It just blows my mind.

Good soil is most key.
If you don't have it, and I don't, you are at disadvantage.

In my patch it's called luck! Down to 3 plants now I don't know how much luck I will have this year.
Not to take away from the really good growers. I need to catch lightning in a seed and good weather too if I am to to break 1300.

Assuming you have top notch soil, it comes down to weather.
85-90 during the day, and 65-70 for nighttime lows, with a decent rainfall now and then seems to get them cranking.

I started with 4 plants, disease completely took out 2 already, 1 is just limping along and 1 is doing ok at the moment but I'm sure will just be a memory in a couple weeks.
Tough hobby.

Weather is key, hot is better than too cold like what people in the northwest US are dealing with, but too hot is bad too. Been 110 heat index here for the last week and growth has slowed. Tomorrow the temps break and cool down so I expect growth to pick up.

SERIOUS? YES THATS THE KEY WORD ---S E R I O U S
Meaning you need to be serious about what seed to grow, what to do with your soil, when to do what is needed, how to do what is needed, why do it at all?
if the newer growers were able to follow around some of this sites top growers, they soon would see what passion, drive and dedication really means.
theres a reason most of the same growers are there each and every year.its not happening by accident my friends.
SOMETIMES YOU CAN GET LUCKY IN THIS HOBBY BUT TO COMPETE EACH AND EVERY YEAR? TAKES EXPERIENCE AS WELL AS PRODUCTS.

Smallmouth is right. Here we are lucky to get to 70 during the day time, and then only for a few hours in the afternoon. Mid 50s at night. I would love to see some 80s for a few weeks, at least.

Check out that Ron W diary. Pap is right- the perennial contenders are putting in a lot of work and are very attentive to the details. The plant tissue tests are definitely something that sets their operation apart from the average grower's. Can't wait to see how that monster 2009 grows. I hope they don't get scared and pick it a week before Topsfield and let it sit in the garage instead of packing on a few extra pounds. ;)

Its just not going to happen in BC unless your in a greenhouse. Down here in the Puget sound we are finally getting temps in the mid 70's but we haven't seen 80 degrees since the first week of June. The silver lining is that our climate seems to keep them growing longer with better late season growth than they get elsewhere.
