I know most of you growers would pull a plant with a rotten stump. But this is my only plant and otherwise it still looks nice and the kin is still growing good (day 16). I have tried to cut out the bad part of the stump. I have been using a cover over it with 2 fans blowing and I am using fungicides. But the stump is terribly broken apart and continues to leak fluids and deteriorate. I am almost sure it is going to finish rotting away no matter what I do. The pumpkin on my plant has just begun to get fun to watch grow and I want to see what I can do to continue it's growth. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should proceed to attempt to grow this fruit ? Should I concentrate more on the vines ahead of the fruit ? I am sure I should pull any growth that will no longer be associated with the main once the connection has totally rotted through. And that will provide room for new growth that is still connected with the main. Is there any hope remaining here for growing a decent pumpkin ?

By growth no longer associated with the main after the stump has rotted through, I am speaking of 2 secondaries that come off the main below the point where the most of the rot is occurring . The very base of the stump appears in a little better shape with just a little leakage. The main problem is a few inches higher up where the vine split open about 3 weeks ago.I just painted it again with Cupro, Daconil and Captan but there seems to be little hope at this point. I have buried most of my vines and have lots of secondary rooting so I think the plant will continue to look healthy for the most part.

I had my stump rot off before pollinating one year. If there is no hope, cut off all rotting parts. Cut it off where the vine is healthy so no rot continues and hit it with 10% water bleach, let it dry with fan and apply a fungicide to area. Bury as many secondaries as possible. Any vines not connected to new main should be cut off.
Plant will recover, they are tough, it might have an adjusting time at first. To give you hope, in 2005, my stumpless plant with only 300 sq foot left gave me a fruit that was on pace to go 1100 lbs before it split at day 41 from aggressive growth. In my climate, it was a massive fruit and it amazed even myself with what it did. Good luck

Thank you for the positive response and good information. I am sure you are right. About all I can do is limit the spread of the rot and keep what remains as rooted and healthy as possible. I will continue to grow this kin until it is mature or it splits.I will use fungicides & fans on the stump for now hoping it is still getting flow from the stump roots as the pumpkin is still in the last few days of critical cell division growth. Then I will get aggressive with a sharp blade and make sure what remains is solid.

if you do not get all of the rot out of the stump, it will travel down the main quite quickly, so make sure all the rot(brown discoloration) is removed. I have to remove stumps every year because of foaming stump, some people have luck in getting them to heal up, myself not so much. so I remove stump as soon as possible as not to lose to many secondaries. we have grown a number of kins over a 1000lbs with out a stump..

I would settle for 600 pounds which would be a personal best for me, so I feel a lot better about my prospects now.

I cut off a rotting stump on july 5th last year and got it to 880, strong peroxide can be sprayed on wounds and rotted areas to clean them up then use sulfur and a fan. I cut it off one foot ahead of the rot.you should be able to get a product similiar to this at a pool supply store for about $18 https://www.amazon.com/Baquacil-Sanitizer/dp/B00EAV0PDM?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0

lost stump on first state record at day 13 it grew to 1296. Remove stump focus on the vine roots. The roots can grow pumpkin.

TD, a tad off topic, but you spoke of fans. 110 or battery? If battery, where do you get them? Peace, Wayne

It's good to hear from you Wayne.Sorry but mine are 110 volt fans. They have a lot of battery operated ones on eBay so you might try checking them out if you shop on-line for some of your things.
