Every single one of my secondaries have been hit with round up. All new growth is yellow and looks real bad. Will the plants grow out of it and become green again or is the season over? Thanks

It will just cost you a little precious time getting your plant up to the size you want to grow it.

No place in a pumpkin patch for roundup.

I agree Don, there are better ways to deal with weeds than taking chances with herbicide.

Ray they will grow out of it. Are you sure they got hit with round up? It could easily be something else too. Micro nutrient deficiency, (best case scenario) or Yellow vine disease. (worst case)

This picture is from Nana Rea's patch last year, This is what round up poisoning looks like.

I said they will grow out of it, but depending on how much they took in, it could take quite some time.

I hate to even say it, but I'd guess your plants are done. I did the same thing two years ago. I rushed the spraying as I was tight for time, and the wind was light...four days later it was over. I tried to talk myself into thinking they'd rebound, but they never did. I grew a lot of cover crop that year as soon as I pulled the plants.

Here's some photos of what mine looked like: http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=221743

I don't fault you for using Round-Up. It's in my Top 3 of must have products, and probably #1. I wouldn't grow without it. I couldn't.

The last two years I've really figured out how to use it in front of the vines. The key is a blast shield that I use. It's almost like an upside down picket sign that I hold on the ground. A 12" tall by 36" wide board that I move around with a 2x2 attached to it. The board always stays facing my plant, and the sprayer nozzle always stays on the other side of the board. It's been the difference maker as I can get within a foot of vine tips.

Of course, I'd rather not be that close to the tips, so I stay ahead 4 feet with weedless ground as the plant grows.

Don't beat yourself up too hard. It's a tough lesson and feels totally awful knowing you probably have to pull the plants. I remember that feeling. You can still get a weedless garden with Round-Up safely.

Here's mine this year. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=259073

Ryan just looked at your pic from 2014 and you mention spraying under old taller growth with no ill effects. Is this a safe alternative to weeding by hand further back on the plant? Obviously you want to avoid the leaves but what about the vine?

This and the previous post go together. First year grower but have also been using roundup for years on and around many other plants. If I'm worried about drift I just apply with a paint roller just I've never use it around AG's. Just looking to make sure it's pretty safe before trying don't want to ruin everything I've done to this point.

Thanks Ryan. Did the same thing. I have been spraying it for years with no issue, and this year I had a little window of time and totally rushed it. Plants were way ahead of schedule and fruit were set. Unreal.

I've sprayed a little under old growth but I don't like risking it. I know some growers do crawl through and shoot the weeds but I don't have the balls to try it. I get the weeds before they start for the most part.

I'm pretty sure LL used round up last year... Her pumpkins turned out decent...I'm tryin it this year on the plants I can't keep up with...I'll dial the sprayer tip open so it doesn't blow mist...so far so good

You should use generic glysophate(41%)only, not Roundup, at the rate of 1 or 2 tbsp. per gal. Don't apply before August and stay far away from the younger leaves and vine tips.

6/30/2016 2:54:15 PM

don young

i use glysophate also just like larry says my 2x4 comment was having fun with ray im sure he knows that we know each other 12 years or more still have a 1081 leonzi seed from long ago. i to got small young leafs a sniff of it couple times i should know better use under mature leafs

One thing I've done in the garden, I wasn't growing AGs then was to use a mop. Spray the mop with roundup far away from the plants then mop the weeds. It works very well, don't have to worry about wind.

In my case, a pumpkin had not yet been set. I waited quite a long time before pulling the plants. Mature leaves stayed green. No new growth continued. Game over. No fun!

I go half dose and stay at least 6 feet from any newer growth. Works very well. Also, spray on a very calm day.
