Can you enter a 100% green squash in a GPC pumpkin contest if there is no squash category offered at that contest?

The site may not have choosen the squash package but you can still weigh it and it counts!

Great question...
Many moons ago, a grower took a pumpkin to a weighoff and had his pumpkin declared a squash (it was the heaviest pumpkin at the contest) and was not awarded top prize, since there was a prize for biggest squash.
Not only was it pretty big controversy, but by todays standards...it was clearly a pumpkin.

Mine isn't going to win anything, but I don't want to cause any problems.

Russ, we don't supersede local event rules such as how they pay or recognize a fruit however if your squash ends up in the top 10 for the site it would be included as part of the top 10.

I weighed at a GPC site last year that did not have a payout for squash. I would have been 3rd overall, but was told that I would not be included in the prize payout because they did not pay for squash. Every other weigh-off I have been to had combined the 2 together and paid based on overall weight. I was rather disappointed after driving 10 hours.

I'm told all squash are pumpkins but not all pumpkins are squash. just like all azaleas are rhodedendrums (sic) but all Rohdedendrum are not azaleas.

Although it doesn't help Lew Cullman got it changed for this year and their rules should be more clear in the future. Squash count as pumpkins in prize money structure. They are a young site and learning.

Don't understand how he got screwed when the site had no Squash category. There are other sites without certain categories. Shouldn't it be up to the grower to determine if there is a category available before showing up.

Dr C. I am close to Wooster OH. I was made aware after we got to Cullman that squash were not included in the payout. I was happy to get my first 1000 pounder and moved on from there. I talked to the regional rep and was fine with the decision. I was close to losing the squash, and wanted an official gpc weight. Cullman was the closest site within 3 weeks so we went.
