It seems everyyear that I grow, I get a couple of secondarys
on my plants that wont grow? or there stunted; there not
like the rest of the secondarys on the plant?

I'm seeing that myself for the first time this year. The vines are pencil thin and the leaves are only 3" or 4" across. Its not every plant, and just a couple side vines on each plant. I have no idea what is causing this.

I am and have experienced this issue. First two secondaries on each side are super aggressive, then the rest are wimpy by comparison. Last year I could blame in on the extreme heat and drought. This year I don't have that excuse. Wondering a contributing factor is if the secondaries are too cramped together

Dan, it could be that they are too cramped together.
some of my other secondarys are just fine that way;
its like some of the secondarys that are stunted just don't have enough vigor for them to grow healthy like the rest.
Anybody else seen this?

I don't think it is chemical. My plants only had one application of garlic, one of eight dust and one root drench of Agri-fos. It hit one plant that was not in a hoop house and some that were in hoops.

I had to check what website I was on when I saw the title.

Seriously, happens to me on at least a couple side vines every year. I always thought it was lack of light since I'm shaded half the day.

I get it almost every year. This year I have 1 plant that has all good secondaries and that is the plant that was shaded the least. the 2 spots I double planted, the inside vines on all 4 plants were stunted. I pulled 2 plants, uncovered from shade cloth and blast them with N and they came out of it with help from heat and sun.

I think getting a few stunted secondaries is inevitable, I get some every year too. In my experience they never really do much. I think many growers just prune them off.

I have 2 pencil vines on my larger plant,,, but I do not think my other plant is large enough to have experienced this.

if your family had as much inbreeding as these atlantic giants then you might expect a few odd sized limbs as well.
every once in a while you will get this on an occasional plant.
if it was every plant? then id start to worry.

Cramped, tight spacing is my guess also. I've noticed that once I start dead heading secondary vines, others pick up steam. Get the side vines to 10-15ft and prune; let the energy go elsewhere.
