what is everyone's thoughts on what direction the main vine should run? I know one heavy hitter said south is best and never north?

Rookie here, but, the way the stems naturaly tilt/grow, I'd say you'd want the vine growing south for the most direct/easiest exposure of the leaves to the Sun.

Doesn´t make a difference, orientation of the leaves will be pretty much the same. Try to get most of the early plant into that part of the patch which has most sunshine in spring (usually you therefore have to set the plant into the southern parts of the patch and let the vine run north), this will be helpful because of the higher soil temperature and the additional sunshine the plant receives in spring.

My fastest growing plants are always headed south, but once the plant is fully grown,I dont believe there is a difference.I think east & west is fine,Dolly last year was growing west to east. She was 1000 pds by August 6th.Great seed the 1067.5 Kent

This was my question a few years ago. I contacted 8 top growers. The general consensus was, that the vine direction had no correlation to the size of the pumpkin. As far as vine management, I noticed on my 30 "regular pumpkin" plants that the ones planted west and growing to the east, toward the morning sun,the main vine grew that direction with ease. The ones that were planted north growing to the south, the main vines kept trying to turn to the east, and I continually had to redirect them. So I vote for west to east. My patch is in full sun.

Position it growing West... so that the stem end will face the sun during the summer if you choose a right hand pollination

If the main goes N/S, Then the vines with the most leaves go E/W. To me it doesen,t make a difference.
