I had a knee replacement 3 weeks ago. What compromises can I expect to make this growing season besides not being able to kneel on the replacement?

I'm a physical therapist, Steve, and we see lots of folks come through our clinic after total knee replacement. You're in an important phase of recovery at 3 weeks; staples are out, hopefully your pain is more manageable, and outpatient therapy has begun. It is so important to grit your teeth and work to regain the range of motion quickly (this is an instance where we therapy types earn the "pain and torture" reputation). By doing so it is totally feasible that you can comfortably grow pumpkins this season and be fully mobile, although you'll need some help with tilling and any heavy lifting/carrying. Kneeling could be possible in the future, but not this year.

You will adapt, where there is a will there is a way. Some years back I completely ripped both quadriceps completely off my knee caps & had both reattached on April 6th. By May 15th I was in the patch with full braces on. 5 years later I still can't squat down so all vine burying and pruning is done stiff legged bending only at the waist. Also use a potato fork in the patch as a crutch. You'll be fine

Well no replacement yet but both ACLs repaired and 5 other surgeries (cartledge removed and vrious clean ups)to the knees . So I am in line for them but they say I am too young. Plus I am hoping I can get some bionic knees by then LOL

I had both knee's done 11/10.I was on my knee's in the patch in 2011 used knee pads and a foam knelling pad. Be the best patient you can be in therapy. The only way to get rid of the pain is to ask for more and it will go away. I still stretch my knee's both directions every morning and have been able to be on my bare knee's no pads since 2012 with full mobility. Call me if you want. Woody

Steve- Fractured my back in 6 places in early May of 2012. Almost pulled my 3 plants that had been in the patch for a month. Followed a lot of the above advice and ended the season with my 1843. If you think things through it will actually end up probably being good therapy (but check with your therapist). Best of luck!

Steve, I've dealt with knee trouble for years, one surgery and a replacement may be just a couple years away. I found it handy to take a 5 gallon bucket to the patch with me. I can use it as a seat or to help me get back to my feet if I have to kneel. I know several people with knee replacements and most are glad they had it done. One guy had to have his replacement re-done twice because he wouldn't quit jumping down off his tractor. So don't abuse it.

Had my left knee done 3 yrs ago and yes you can kneel on them. It's just a little harder getting back up than before but I can go all day now with no pain whatsoever. As Frank stated it is so important (and yes very painful)to get your range of motion back.
