Please send us your picture and cross for posting. The goal of this diary is to honor the recipients of the Howard Dill award and to give other growers a chance to see what the pumpkin looks like. Information about the cross will also be provided when available. Participation is completely voluntary and submissions should be emailed to [email protected] for posting. We will refrain from making any biased comments about the entries. If you locate any inaccurate information in this diary, please contact us immediately so that we may have it corrected. Good luck at the weighoffs this year and we hope to see your pumpkin here soon.

Can a Howard Dill Award be given to one with a rib split? Have to ask...

I was wondering this also for a period of time earlier this season. The GPC doesn't seem to specify whether DMG and EXB pumpkins are elidgible or not. Therefore I would think it is in the hands of the judges at the weighoff.

A DMG I could understand. EXH is a different story, we have had those WIN in the past.

I am under the impression that local rules can determine how HD is awarded to a point. Our local rules says it must be sound and also be the pumpkin submitted for local prize monies. But I don't think there is a GPC rule except for that it needs to be sound.

Exactly, the lack of details from the gpc suggest that if you have a dmg pumpkin, you could enter it as EXB only and still qualify. I think at our weighoff in doylestown it would probably be deemed inelidgable.

Howard Dill award: This award will be given to the grower of the prettiest, symmetric, orange or orange-red pumpkin at each Intermediate and Premium Level site. How the winner is decided based on this description will be up to each site coordinator.
From the GPC Website;
Relax...they are just pumpkins!! (not from the GPC site)

lol...Chris...its his only chance of any kind of award this year I think!! Chad is all about the pretty pumpkins!!
Anyone that has seen my diary, has seen the beauty that Chad has on his 1495 Stelts seed...Mr. Howard Dill would be proud.

A grower brings 2 equal sized pumpkins to a weighoff and is forced to decide which one he will enter into competition and which one will be weighed as Exhibition only.

This is my opinion and it is only an opinion.. I think that the HD award should be only given to entered pumpkins. I think exb or dmg pumpkins should not be considered.. Remember this is only my opinion and if it offends anyone I am sorry..

I think that EXB pumpkins should only be classified as such if they are sound pumpkins but the smaller of two entered by the same grower. And if the smaller one is in contention for the weight awards. If an EXB pumpkin is classified as such under these criteria, I think it should be eligable for the Howard dill award. No dmg pumpkins should be considered.

I disagree...you are allowed to enter one pumpkin...any others that are weighed are exhibition only

If an exhibition pumpkin can win an award,a grower could bring numerous pumpkins for exhibition.

Not according to their logic Ned..You can enter an Exhibition and receive the HDA at several events if you wish...See what my problemn is..An EXH is not eligible for awards or Prize money in my opinion

I want to be clear that this is an open discussion, because the gpc isn't very clear on the issue. As the club rep of a weighoff that gives $500 for the Howard dill award winner, I want to know the popular opinion. As I am in charge of making sure each grower is treated fairly, I need to know everyone's feelings. I believe the gpc is firm on no previous entries allowed. Ned's comment is a strong reason to not allow EXB entries for the award. Because the award is part of the gpc package. Aka you could make the rounds with one sweet pumpkin and clean up.

In some parts of the country their is only 1 weigh off in a 1000 mile radius.. and not a whole lot of entries either.. so I think if all attending agree why not.I personally would have allowed a certain grower to win the event ..even if it had a hole in the pumpkin .. it was still the biggest .. In my opinion it is very hard to manipulate the weight of the kin from a hole underneath ..and if he said he didn't .. that's good enough for me

In Missouri (according to the BP weighoff page), we had 3 total entries last year at our 1 weighoff. It was similar with AG's in 2011. I agree with Dale and at some events, this needs to be a local issue.

damaged or exibition only pumpkins are just that. why would anyone expect to win any prize for a pumpkin that is either not sound or not in the weigh-off contest? it make no sence. winning with a damaged or otherwise non entry. it is just wishfull thinking folks. pap
