Anaid_tecoud has one growing on the blossum end. I was thinking of doing that next year for my orange pumpkin. Is it best to do it where you terminated the main vine. Anybody try this before? the pumpkins look awesome doing it this way.

From experience you want to be able to see the blossom...as it is the area most prone to splitting

BiZ had a real giant one.... but managing the vine over the top is not FUN. When we picked it up to relieve tension... the bottom blew out...

Not the big ones but we've grown many of our carvers like this. We seem to get the perfect shape pumpkin 99% of the time.

the blossom end of a pumpkin (both early on in life and also during its life cycle" is the thinest wall area of the plant.
would not gamble by having a fruit doing 30-45 pounds a day pressing down on the blossom.
ok if its a field pumpkin but not if its an ag.

Vince has grown them like that in the past. I wondered how the blossom end holds up. Maybe the blossom grows thicker if it has to support extra weight. Some of mine that rolled over onto the blossom end seemed to do that. Btw does it mean I'm an old timer if I know why Vince uses that nickname? Lol

The one Spudder mentions is what I'm talking about, not the size and weight but the look, looks really nice.

This looks fun, thanks for the ideas and photos. We will have to try this for the kids next year. We're talking 300-500 lbs on some backup plants, not your gigantic ones. :) They look so nice!

When is the best time to set them on their end? Do you have some kind of a jig to hold it that way until it is stable?

Why not have a competition for 2014. Say 150 sq ft patch grown on blossom end to give a perfectly round one?
