Everywhere there are growers

This is the time of the year when we all want to know ‘what will my pumpkin weigh on the scale’. Will we have a personal best, will it be heavy or light ? Once all the weigh offs are finished we begin looking for the best seeds to plant for next season. Growers have varied interest. While some select for color and shape, universally we all like big and heavy. After all these are giant pumpkins. Color and shape are in the eye of the beholder but weight we can measure.

Team-Pumpkin introduced new updated charts early this year so all growers here on BP will have a tool to estimate the weights of their pumpkins. In addition to the familiar OTT Chart we introduced a new ‘Team-Pumpkin, 2013 Enhanced OTT Chart for Estimating Pumpkin Weights’. This is the most reliable and accurate way to estimate the weight of a pumpkin using the OTT measurements. It is especially useful when considering if a pumpkin is heavy or light to the chart as a criteria to select seeds for next year.

The reason for the ranges in the Enhanced Chart is that if you look at the data provided there are many different weights for each OTT so the idea that each OTT has just one weight is not an accurate representation. The single weight per OTT chart is provided and is good for an in the patch point in-time weight so growth can be estimated over a period of time. However, when you bring your pumpkin to the scale the range or Enhanced Chart provides you with the realistic weight range of your pumpkin if it is normal. .

The new charts are in the ‘How To’ section on BP. For those who don’t want to read the entire article the charts are on pages 6, 7, and 8.
