I have been very diligent keeping my pumpkin covered with a sheet every year but I was wondering if I can slack off a little and let it get a few hours of sun now and again, and the main reason is that I want to show off my work in progress.I suppose the answer is a shade structure. Are all of you keeping the sheets/cover on?

I usually take my cover off between 6- 9 at night. The sun is not as strong and that is usually when I get most of my curious visiters stopping by

Good question pumpkin-eater.

I was wondering wether covering the pumpkin delays the change in colour? There are always exceptions I guess and some will turn deep orange covered or not but will a pumpkin turn orange quicker when exposed to sunlight?

The sun matures the fruit.I take the sheet off when the sun gos behind the trees(like 6pm)Other then that never for more then 5 minutes. You dont want it getting hot.I think a little, to warm it up in the morning shouldn't hurt like 5 minutes.

dandytown, My 835 from 2011 had green spots only where leaves left shadows on the pumpkin. Uncovering will allow for more color development in some cases

As fall arrives & the weather gets colder, some growers take the sheets off for a couple hours on a nice warm sunny day to warm up their pumpkin. The pumpkins can feel cold to the touch after a cold night, so warming it up before you put the blankets back on for the night will help the fruit stay warm throughout the night. I hope this helps.
