Does anyone have any suggestions or know of anything out there to push gains to the limit. I read Big City Growers dairy and he said he went from 20lb gains to 50lb gains with a treatment and would like to try to push 1 or 2 kins to the limit.

I've been consistently hitting 20-30 Lb days in the 30-35 dap mark.. soil numbers look fine. Wonder what I'm missing as I'm seeing the growth curve not keeping up with the benchmarks I'd like to be hitting. I've got Ron's DVD...very good watch. Does anyone do anything in particular during this time when the rate ramps up outside of the normal foliar and drench schedules?
Maybe I'm being unreasonable as our soil wont dry out at all from the daily deluges but I sure would like to see a few days in the 40 Lb area.

Pap is exactly right! The dvd is more than well worth it. There are multiple things that I will now do differently in the future after having the chance to purchase and view the dvd. It is an absolute bargain for the price!

Do not blow your season on a cheap shortcut. It will do nothing to build your level of knowledge, skill and hard work (or your reputation for it), and it will not give you results that will carry on into the next season. You should work to learn how to bring out the growth characteristics that are genetically inherent to the plant rather than imposing it from an outside influence.

I believe that the best gardeners are not just good growers. They are plant breeders, soil biologists, weather experts, chemists, hard workers etc. etc. etc....

The scale doesn't care what a compost pile weighs, even if it gained 50lbs a day.

i would agree... there is more to growing a big pumpkin than just pouring the juice on... what works for me might not work for you.. i have a pretty good idea what went wrong and when it went wrong and now i have a better understanding of how things should have gone and will go on from here...knowledge is power..

I understand that it is a risk but I have 4 pumpkins growing and would just like to try to push one of them. If you never experiment with different things no one might have accomplished getting a 2009lb pumpkin. I would just like to try to push 1 of my plants to see the results and was looking for suggestions of what to use.

So I'm to believe that nobody figured out anything to bump up the numbers from 20 to 30 to 40 to 50 over the years? Just water and wait?

That kind of knowledge is not easily come by, so it is not easily shared unless it is believed that you are willing to put in the time and effort to earn that privilege. Ask Pap how long it took them to learn it. Get the DVD. Get a mentor. Don't take shortcuts, and don't expect anyone to divulge their hard earned knowledge until a level of trust has been formed. You will surely be rewarded.

Lots of 0-0-60, lots of water, lots of fish/kelp emulsion, lots of calcium/magnesium, and a lot of micronutrients.

Don't worry about a soil or tissue test. Guaranteed to split your pumpkin wide open.

Seriously: slow and steady gets to the weigh off.

Seriously(again): Join a growers club. Find an experienced grower(s) who will mentor you. Dick's Tips 2 and the SNGFPG videos from SNGPG.com will be a big help.

Part of big gains is the right seeds with the right pollinator. The next part is soil prep according to your fall and spring soil tests. Start early, harden off slowly, keep seedlings warm, but not hot, 24/7, keep soil moist. Spray with ferts, insecticides and anti fungals, and hope you don't get blind sided by something unexpected.

You can't push the river to make it go faster.

Thanks Steve, happy to get a little reinforcement that what I've been doing is with the right stuff. I guess I should be happy in the 20-30 Lb a day range for NC. I dunno, maybe it will pick up the pace in a few days anyway.

Sparcmat: 20-30 lbs/day is normal. Get in touch with the Finders at http://sgpgrowers.wix.com/homepage(Southern Giant Pumpkin Growers)

They are great people and a great resource for info of all kinds.
