Not wanting to Jinx anyone but I was wondering how many 1770 Lieber plants have managed to grow a pumpkin what with the issues growers are having with them.

Seems it has been a bit of hit and miss for some.

Also, given the issues with sterility and the unknown reason for yellowing of the leaves what are thought on planting a seed from a 1770 cross in 2014? Could that line die out due to underplanting?

Thought I had better mention, mine is 1770 x 1290 at 194" 28DAP and also with a side vine kin for genetics (1770 x 854.5 Frei, 112" 24DAP)

Keen to see how everyone else is doing

My 1770 bonsai develops the first female now, probably ready for pollination in 8 days and enough time for a little genetics pumpkin with viable seeds. The males on that plant have heaps of pollen, and the leaves are green, and I will try to do the cross 1770 Lieber x 1655 Ford. Currently my 1655 Ford plant is the best plant I´ve ever had, currently 130 sqft only and the pumpkin grows as fast as I hadn´t seen it before in my patch in previous years. Despite some poor performance in some cases, the 1770 seeds contain genetics which were responsible for the 1770 fruit and might turn out advantageous in a new cross. Time will tell.

Your 1770 x 854 cross should be a fine thing, looking at the performance of your 854 and 1770 plants right now I would recommend this cross to others and will bear in mind to send you a seed request in a few months :-)

I was growing the 1770. The plant cover a good size area of 28' x 30'. But the problem was the leaf stems were only about 8 inches high. Second problem was each set pumpkin got to a size little bit smaller then a basketball and wouldn't grow anymore. The only thing they did was started to turn orange instead of staying a pale yellow like most pumpkins do being so small.I gave up on it and will probably never grow it again. Never had a plant ever were the leaf stem was so very short and pumpkins set wouldn't grow..

Also forgot to add, the leafs were a pale green color and some the farthest out toward the end of the vines were more so a yellowish color... Basically, the worse looking plant I ever had in my patch since 2002

I have the 1770 X 1770 the plant is doing well and I have a nice pumpkin growing at 10 ft out. You can see a picture of it here: http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=205962. I have also pollinated by 980 Fredericks with the 1770. I will probably grow this cross next year depending upon how it does at the weigh-off.

Started 2 of the seeds, planted the tiny plants outside in greenhouses and they both rotted. All the other plants were perfectly fine however. I replaced the 1770's with a 1000 martin11 and it has caught up to the others and is at 700+ today.

I have a 1170 growing too.
At the beginning the plant was a very slow grower. Tiny vines, small leaves and the first leaves with yellow points.
I have polinated 3 sets and every set was working.
Now i have a nice orange pumpkin with around 400 lbs. Its growing slowly but its growing. I hope for a real orange beauty. Cross: 1770 Lieber x 934 Schieder (1421 Stelts x 991 Urena)

I gave a 1770 seed to a friend to grow this year. He said the plant was slow and always looked unhealthy (yellow leaves / small vines) when compared to the other pumpkin plants in the garden.

here is a pic of mine that stopped growing. The stem started rotting. plant was normal and very aggressive. The fruit never put up big gains, but was steady until the stem started oozing.

I lost my 1770 the 28th of July, from 20 some odd days of rain!! The main vine was oozing out water from the stump all the way to the pumpkin. Not a (foamer) it was straight liquid and gel!! But this happened to all my plants. The 1770 leaves were yellow on the tips and the pumpkin grew very slow. It was bright orange and weighed 900lbs went 50lbs heavy.

Mine took a week to germinate but then grew fine except none of the males had stamens and the females that were pollinated never got to the size of a volleyball. It was also my only plant with yellow in the leaves.
Finally yanked it so that the 1048 Engel growing from the other end of the patch would have more room.

My 1770 plant covers over 800 sf and I have lost every pollination attempt. Same issue they get softball to soccer ball size and get wrinkles all over and abort. No male flower stamens since day one and all leaves in the first 10'-14' had the yellow pigment edges. Definitely a Male Sterile plant. What a disappointment when you only grow two plants and this occurs...

My 1770 Had a lot of yellow leaves and two good sets that stopped growing about the size of a basketball. All of the male flowers were sterile. The plant was very aggressive but I couldn't get any pumpkins to keep growing.
