Hi all,
I have a split in my pumpkin at the dill ring and I was wondering what I should do about it. I have pipetted half a cup of bleach solution ( my plan was to pipet it in and out ) into the crack and after probing 5 inches into the crack (that's how long the pipet is) I couldn't get the bleach out. I then put a spoonful of sulphur into the crack and like the bleach, it didn't fill up the crack at all. What do you guys think i should do? Here is a link with a picture.

I had a split like that two years ago. I just got some caulk and filled the hole. Had to fill it a few times because the pumpkin kept growing slowly until the day I picked it. I also put a solar blanket on top of the pumpkin to keep water off of it. The split happened around August 20th for me and I was still able to get it to the scale the last week of September but if I had to go any longer it would have rotted out. Using sulfur and bleach was a good idea. If you want to save the seeds you may consider cutting the pumpkin open now however.

Shiny side up or down on the blanket--I am assuming this is a "space blanket"

I used shiny side up with a sheet under it.

I'm pretty sure its into the cavity, if so plug it with caulk or wax and see how big you can get it. I've had them grow for 3-4 weeks with a hole in them.

Fill the hole with plumber's putty. Keep filling the whole us as it grows.

Ok, thx. Do I have just capped the crack for now. Should I remove the caulk and fill it up or just leave the cap as is?

Everyone,
Thank you for all of the help! I am hoping that the split hasent gone into the cavity. The pumpkin has gained 25 lbs over night so I'm hoping that the pumpkin will recover.

Ashton, get it sealed like Vineman said (we've used Lexel)and it is likely to keep growing if you get it done soon enough. Come weighoff time, the sealsant comes off and you go to weighoff.

We had a pumpkin with a blossom end split a few years ago that was patched with Lexel sealant.

ashton that hole is definitely through.Plug it as suggested and keep measuring. If its growing your prob.ok -if it stops its prob. starting to rot and you may want to cut it open to get the seeds out.If you split one then youre growing them big!!!!

Again thank you everyone for the help. I will cut the 1775 up into about 100 lb pieces and weigh it on a regular scale. I still have 2 months to get one growing so look out!
