Hey guys/gals, What can cause a plant to basically shutdown without any noticeable disease, insect damage, or rot? I go a little more in-depth in my diary entry: http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=205423 I mean, the obvious indications favor a lack of N (despite some serious N fertilization over the past month...hence my fear of over-fertilization), but why would that cause the pumpkins to also slow to a crawl? In fact, the only thing still growing is the main. Thanks!

Sounds like the precursor to YVD (Yellow Vine Decline). My guess is the leaves will continue to lose their color and you will not be able to get any more pumpkins to set. There is really nothing you can do at this point other than pull the plant if you do infect have YVD.
But remember, there is always the chance I could be wrong.

Your soil looks dusty dry, if that´s true for the patch down to a depth of 8 inch, then I would try some decent watering first (the whole patch, because everywhere are roots...even 5-8 ft away from the leaves, I suppose) and see how the plants respond within the next two days.

Ah dang, YVD would be about the worst possible thing, ha. At least the decision to pull it would be simplified. I'll just have to keep an eye on it. Thus far, no changes in either direction. Hey Pumpking, I took your advice and watered the whole area considerably...definitely underestimated the square footage I'd need with my drip lines. So. many. noob mistakes. Thanks both of you for the info!
