Yes, I cut mine off in sections over the course of a couple days and apply fungicide. A few years ago I had one abort from taking it to close all at once. Eleviate any kind of pressure so that your pumpkin has room to grow without stress on the stem.

If possible I keep it as long as I can. Most of the time this only gets cut when the pumpkin is harvested depending on the positioning. I do not bury this vine but I want to keep as many leaves that I can that have the least distance to travel to the pumpkin.

we like extra room around the fruit with no secondaries close to the pumpkins stem. they only serve to pin the stem area down as the fruit grows.(main and secondaries within several feet of the fruit should have a bouncy feel rather than a tight rope when you touch them)
a common mistake many growers make. they are afraid to cut several tap roots around the main and secondaries or cull a secondary if need be. it will help more that it hurts down the road.
this will come with expreience.

Yes. We cut it off as soon as it gets in the way.
