Subject:  question about water

hi there i have a soaker hose going through my pumpkin patch just under the dirt to help with watering them crazy tap-roots, i have a pumpkin that that looks like is going to set almost on top of the hose, should i move the hose or is ok right where it is.

i was wondering if it will rot out the pumpkin from there beening to much moisture underneath. thanks

you want to keep area around kin as dry as possible. also, most people place mill fabric or half sheet of plywood under pumpkin with fine play sand. since it's under the soil I wouldn't move it, I would use a pallet or place blocks under plywood.

Bunton, I had the same problem this year. I added about 3" of sand for a platform and put plastic underneath that. No water has been making its way to the fruit.

The problem with soaker hoses from my experience is that they tend to develop three zones... to wet, to dry and a small zone of 'just right'. As a result I have gone to drip tapes which offer 120+ feet of 'just right'.

To get at your questions my pumpkins are typically on top of about 3 lines and other than a mill fabric / weed block layer with a little sand I have not had a rot or flow rate issue.

This may not be a direct comparison to a soaker hose but it can at least act as a piece of similar data.
