No matter what the method of applying water.

You should use the feel test to ensure proper moisture in conjunction to watching the plant. It should be damp not wet a few inches down and the plant should have cupped leaves and be growing. If the plant is flagging it could be due to both under or over watering. If the flagging is on the end of the vines where the roots aren't established yet it may not be getting enough water. If it is not growing it may not be getting enough water. If the plant is yellowing, it could be overwatering.

I dig down about 6 inches, grab a hand full and squeeze gently. It should form a ball that doesn't fall apart when released, if not its too dry. Then rub the ball between your fingers, it should not feel slimy and should crumble without a lot of effort. If it doesn't then it is too wet.

Hope this makes sense.

Good luck
